• Heading into last weekend’s National Super Sedan Title at Mount Gambier’s Borderline Speedway in South Australia, rookie racer Tyson Moon wasn’t one of the favoured drivers but that didn’t stop him from standing up to be counted.

Moon was without a doubt the find of the National Title weekend, after he brought home an impressive fifth-place finish. Moon was within the top-five runners throughout the weekend by sitting fifth in the point standings after night one, which included a come-from-behind heat-race win, and then going on to qualify fifth for the National Title deciding feature race.

“The only real expectation I had heading into the National Title weekend was to just qualify into the feature race, so to score a top-five finish was something that well and truly exceeded our expectations,” commented the 26-year-old racer from Bega on the far south coast of NSW.

“Throughout the whole weekend, I was just trying to take each race as it comes and not get too far ahead of myself, but when I had qualified so high up for the feature race, I just wanted to maintain my spot within the top five, which is what I managed to do.”

Leading up to his maiden National Title campaign, Moon had been enjoying an encouraging first full season in Super Sedans. He finished 10th in the South Australian Title last month at Borderline Speedway and made some impressive gains throughout his trip to Tasmania in January to contest the Grand National and Grand Prix events.

“I have been learning so much during my first full season in Super Sedans and it’s great that I’m getting to get some results to go with it,” said Moon, who apart from a top-five National Title finish picked up the Best Presented Team award with his dad Daryl for the National Title weekend.

“Running a lot of the major events teaches you so much, as you are visiting new tracks and taking on the country’s best Super Sedan races, and you can’t help but learn.”

Being the son of a popular NSW-based racer in Daryl Moon, who races the NSW # 47 Moons Earthworks supported Sweet car, Tyson is determined to not only make his own mark in the sport but promote the state of NSW better when it comes to Super Sedans.

“Dad has been racing for a few years now and I’ve always been in the background just helping him, so now that I’m driving, I want to build my own reputation,” explained the NSW # 57 Moons Earthworks supported Sweet racer.

“There is no doubt that this season has seen me make big gains towards carving out my own reputation, especially during the National Title weekend, and I’m hopeful that I can continue to help put NSW Super Sedans back on the national map.”

Prior to this current season, Moon had only competed in a handful of race meetings in a Super Sedan, which before that saw him have a brief stint in Legend Cars after venturing into speedway from a motocross background.

The next race meeting on the 2019-20 season calendar for Moon and the team is going to be the NSW Title at Goulburn Speedway on the Saturday night of April 4. Other remaining major events include, the North South Super Sedan 50 on April 10 and 11 at Moama’s Heartland Raceway (NSW), the GP53 Memorial event at Brisbane’s Archerfield Speedway (Qld) on May 16 and then the final Queensland Series round at Bundaberg’s Carina Speedway (Qld) on May 30.

For Tyson Moon, the future is certainly looking bright, and to use his dad’s popular catchphrase, it’s happy days!
