• This Saturday night (December 9) the winged pocket rockets, the Formula 500’s, will take over the Murray Machining and Sheds Murray Bridge Speedway with the running of the 2017/18 “King of the Bridge”. A high-quality line-up of 26 drivers has been assembled including two former race winners, Whyalla’s Angelo Karoussis and Victorian Chris Bellman.

Karoussis, a two times Champion, comes into the event having raced successfully in America during the off season and he is coming off a feature race win at his last Murray Bridge start.

“I’ll be up for a good result that’s for sure. We had the engine on the dyno last weekend and we found some more power, so things are looking good. I think I am the only two-time winner so hopefully we can add another this weekend” added Angelo in the leadup to the event.

Other South Australian drivers who will be in contention for a home track victory include Bordertown’s Patrick Merrett, Brad Stell, Lockie Cates and Jarrod Moore.

But the locals will have a tough time defending their home clay as a strong interstate contingent is heading to Murray Bridge, with a number of them showing great recent form.

The current “King” Chris Bellman is coming off a recent win at the Tolmer Speedway in the Stampede Series while Dion Bellman emerged victorious in the recent South Australian Championship at the Borderline Speedway at Mount Gambier. Allansford’s Jack Bell is always fast at Murray Bridge and has numerous feature event wins at the venue while fellow Victorians Matthew Symons and Ash Sinclair also can’t be counted out.

The real wild card will be Tasmanian teenager Jock Goodyer, who was outstanding at the Australian Title earlier this year and he has been racing Sprintcars this season back in his home state.

One of the biggest trophies in Australian Speedway, plus a cloak and a crown, awaits the winner of the “King of the Bridge” so you can be assured that every one of the 26 drivers nominated will be racing hard to add one of the most prestigious Formula 500 victories to their resumes.

The final pre-Christmas meeting will also feature a massive support program of Super Sedans, Wingless Sprints, Street Stocks, Modlites, Junior Sedans and AMCA Nationals.

The Super Sedans will see the likes of South Australian Champion Dave Gartner doing battle with Ryan Alexander and Paul Blenkiron while in the Wingless Sprints Australian Champion Joel Chadwick will make his first start of the season taking on the regular front runners such as William Caruso, Anthony Tapley and Aaron Doe.

With such a big program racing will begin at 4pm in an attempt to get the entire meeting completed well before the 11pm curfew.
