• This weekend the Super Sedans return to the dirt ovals of South Australia with a huge double header weekend that is sure to be emotionally charged as two of the biggest races of the season, the “Billy Miller” Fireball Derby and the South Australian Championship are decided this Friday and Saturday night.

The “Billy Miller” Fireball Derby will be held at Adelaide Motorsport Park on Friday March 24, just a week after Bill took his final lap of the venue as the Australian Speedway Family said goodbye to one of the sports true greats. The following night the South Australian Championship will be held at Murray Bridge for the 8th consecutive year. The State Championship was a race that Bill was victorious in during the 2006/07 season at the Westline Speedway at Whyalla.

Unfortunately, the fields this weekend are a little light in numbers but the quality is there with the fields comprising of drivers who have claimed multiple State and Australian Championships.

Leading the South Australian charge this weekend is current and four times South Australian Dave Gartner from Penola. This weekend will see Gartner make his first appearances of the season at AMP and Murray Bridge but despite his lack of track time this year he will be a major contender to win his third South Australian Championship in succession. Gartner is also a former Western Australian State Champion so he knows how to get it done in State Title events.

Joining Gartner will be current Victorian Champion Ryan Alexander, who is a six-time feature race winner this year in the JD Couriers Super Series. Alexander has also been the runner-up in the State Title for the last two years. Another leading local hope will be Michael Miller, who has been third in the title on two previous occasions, and he is the current JD Couriers Series Champion. In addition to the drivers mentioned they will be joined across the weekend by Paul Blenkiron, who has two Murray Bridge feature race wins to his credit, Kym Jury, who won his last start at Waikerie, Trevor Ware, Jason Gantz, Quinton Thompson and Michelle Dillon.

With two big events this weekend the interstate contingent almost matches the locals in car numbers with six drivers making the trek to South Australia.

The interstate field will be made up of three Nicola’s, as Mick, Mick Jr and Peter, set their sights on taking home the cash on offer. Mick is the most decorated of the Family having previously won seven State Championships, including 3 South Australian Titles, and he was victorious in the Fireball Derby the last time it was conducted. Mick Nicola will enter this weekend as the current Tasmanian Champion.

Brother Peter Nicola has also worn the #1 as a two-time Victorian Champion to go along with his Queensland State Championship.

Moama’s Lucas Roberts has also greeted the chequered flag first in the South Australian Championship but he is a five times Victorian Champion.

Joining the Nicola’s and Roberts will be fellow Victorian David McKenzie and Tasmanian Corey Smith.

So, if you are a fan of V8 sedan racing make sure that you get at least one of the events this weekend, or better still pay tribute to a true gentleman of the sport and be trackside on both nights as the Super Sedan competitors go for gold, or should that be pink, at AMP and Murray Bridge this Friday and Saturday.
