• The biggest challenge facing Gympie’s Mark Pagel this Saturday night (December 3) in round six of the 2016/2017 Think Money Super Sedan Championship Series might not come from his fellow drivers, but rather from the weight of expectation that he will carry into the event as he heads home to Mothar Mountain Speedway as the championship leader. The partisan Gympie crowd will no doubt have high expectations for a local boy who has already accumulated a string of big wins in his speedway career and now finds himself leading Australia’s premier season-long Super Sedan championship. The Mothar Mountain circuit always produces plenty of action, but Pagel knows the track better than anyone and will draw on his knowledge of the unique layout to chase his third feature race win for the season.

So, who can knock Pagel off on home soil? Well, as it turns out, there are several contenders in the 20-car field who bring outstanding records of success – both at Gympie and elsewhere – into the event. Veteran racer Wayne Randall is one of the most accomplished drivers in the sport and he also has an outstanding record around Mothar Mountain, while former national champion and National Series winner Darren Kane is another who will be confident of disrupting Pagel’s plans for a successful homecoming.

Ian Brims has also enjoyed a great start to the season and possesses a wealth of experience from which to draw in his bid to tame the mountain, or perhaps it is Gary Pagel who will emerge victorious in the 40-lap feature event. Although it will be only his second meeting for the season, Jason Campbell is another who must be considered a real threat to the established order, while Rockhampton’s Gavin Northfield has also proven himself capable of taking on, and beating, the best in the business.

Other locals hoping to impress on home soil will be Tim O’Shea, Dempsie Pails and Andrew Corbett, the former national Production Sedan champion who will be making his Super Sedan debut.

Also taking to the track on Saturday night in what will be the only Super Sedan show at Gympie before the track hosts the opening round of the Summer Slam Tour on December 29 are Brendan Doyle, Bob McCosker, Nicholas O'Keefe, David O'Keefe, Nick Sampson, Tony Brinkmann, Sam Grundy, Brian Grundy, Craig Craft and Rodney Craft.

The format for the event will see each driver contest three qualifying heats in a bid to secure their place in the field for the 40-lap feature race presented by M&N Car Carriers, with the final starting order for the first four rows to be determined by the pre-race Penrite Grid Draw, an initiative that has certainly proven the catalyst for some great racing in recent weeks.

With a huge support program featuring Junior Sedans, Microsprints, Production Sedans, Street Stocks and the opening round of the King of the Mountain Challenge for National 4s Sedans, make tracks to Mothar Mountain Speedway this Saturday night for the action and excitement of round five of the Think Money Super Sedan Championship Series.
