• The month of March promises so much. Increased prize money, big car counts and a Sprintcar track championship that is heading for a nail-biting finish.

    This Saturday night, March 7, at Valvoline Raceway, 52 Sprintcars, including Australian Champion David Murcott, will take to the track for the first of four $5,000 to win main events. Coupled with the increased prize money, there is also a ‘series within a series’ with a $10,000 point fund at the end of the month. Put this with the track championship point fund and that is some serious money to round out the season.

    Courtesy of his win at the last event a fortnight ago, Sam Walsh has clawed his way back into possible contention for the championship. Walsh currently sits in fourth, 99 points off the lead. He will need results to go his way however, but nonetheless he can still count himself as a contender.

    This placed Max Dumesny is in a similar predicament to Walsh. Being 90 points from the lead, he too will also need results to fall in his favour.

    The top two protagonists in this season’s track championship look set to go at it for the remaining four nights of racing. James Thompson leads on 3832 points however Ben Atkinson, who sits second, has made some big inroads into Thompson’s lead and now just sits 47 points adrift of Thompson. It promises to be a fascinating finish to the season.

    The battle for fifth, sixth and seventh in the standings is as intense as the top four with Toby Bellbowen (5th), Danny Reidy (6th) and Jackson Delamont (7th) separated by just 20 points.

    With the intensity level raised to a new level this month, positions are sure to change, pointing to an exciting conclusion.

    If you can’t be trackside, there will be regular Facebook updates throughout the night; simply search ‘Sprintcar Association of NSW’ and like the page. It should be noted that the SANSW is leading the way in social media interaction when it comes to Sprintcar racing across the country.

    Drivers will contest the usual format this Saturday night, consisting of time trials, heats, pole shuffle, C-Main, B-Main and the 30 lap A-Main.

    Time trials are expected to kick off at 6pm.

    The top 20 in the track championship are as follows;

    James Thompson 3832
    Ben Atkinson 3785
    Max Dumesny 3742
    Sam Walsh 3733
