• In support of the Sprintcars last Saturday night at the Whyalla Speedway was an all open wheeled program including the 2019/20 South Australian Formula 500 Championship, Round 1 of the V6 Sprint Tri-Series and Wingless Sprints.

The Formula 500 Championship only saw seven cars front for action with local racer Angelo Karoussis leading all 25 laps to win his first South Australian Championship. Second place went to Corey Jones with Brad Stell completing the podium. Brendan Zadow, Ben Cooper and Richard Schmidt rounded out the finishers with Nathan O’Shea being the only non-fisher.

Earlier the three heats saw three different winners with each of the eventual podium finishers claiming a heat win.

“There were only seven cars but keep in mind the seven cars here in Whyalla were the best available cars in the State. It takes a bit of the shine off my first State Title, but you can only beat the drivers who turn up. I give credit the guys who travelled up here” added Angelo following his win.

The opening round of the V6 Sprint Tri-Series was dominated by Kym Simon as he led all 20 laps of the A-Main winning ahead of Archie Fabian and Chris James. Renee Pfieler was impressive all night as he claimed fourth ahead of rookie Jordan Grillett and Glen Bousfield.

Kym Simon also claimed two heat wins on the night while Renee Pfieler enjoyed her first ever V6 Sprint race win as she led from start to finish in heat 3. Heat two saw the demise of Damien Eve who rolled in turn four after clipping one of the infield tractor tyres.

For the second rime this season Jack McCarthy claimed the Wingless Sprint A-Main backing up his opening night performance at Murray Bridge. Rookie Tyson Martin pushed him all the way in what was an outstanding run, while Hayden Vickers, Mick Barker and Nicole Southby rounded out the top five.
