• Defending series champion Luke Oldfield again outclassed the field to win round two of the East Coast Logistics Sprintcar Track Championship at Archerfield Speedway on Saturday night (November 19), delivering another dominant display to secure back-to-back victories. Starting his Advanced Mobility Cool #17 from the outside front row, Oldfield would ultimately lead every lap and, untroubled by a late-race restart, would lead home Jy Corbet, who improved upon his third placing in the opening round. Taylor Prosser finished third before being relegated to the rear for his role in an incident that put Kevin Titman out of the race, elevating Randy Morgan into the top three, with a big charge from Brent Kratzmann carrying him to fourth ahead of Ryan Newton. Next best were Brad Ayres, Adam Butler and Trent Vardy, with Karl Hoffmans and Harry Stewart rounding out the top ten.

In round four of the McCosker Super Sedan Series, Mitchell Gee served up a spectacular display out front for all but the final few laps. Having led from the outset, Gee refused to move from the highline, running the cushion to great effect and seemingly on his way to victory lane. However, Sean Black had other ideas and plugged away on the bottom to eventually reel in Gee with less than 10 laps remaining. Gee would also succumb to the advances of Brad Pascoe over the closing stages, with Michael Nicola, Tyson Moon and Steve Jordan next best.

Despite a strong interstate representation amongst the starters, it was the locals who stood tall to dominate the results in the Queensland Compact Speedcar Championship, with Andrew Parkes securing the crown. Matt O’Neill and Richard Treanor filled the minor placings ahead of Trent Usher and Trevor Perry.

Boyd Chaffey proved too strong in the Crete 4 U Formula 500 Series feature race, finishing well in advance of runner-up Liam Williams, with Brady Argles completing the podium.

A 26-car field hit the track for Sprintcar qualifying and it was Oldfield who topped the timesheets, clocking 12.190 to secure KRE Quick Time. With the field split into three groups, Ryan Newton (12.290) and Aaron Kelly (12.686) would also score maximum points as the quickest in their respective groupings.

The opening heat race went the way of Corbet over Morgan and Kelly, with Adam Butler downing Harry Stewart and Oldfield to win heat two.

Titman proved too quick in heat three, with Newton grabbing second spot with a last-lap pass under Jack Bell, whose subsequent spin would elevate Hoffmans to third.

Kelly cleared away from the front row to win heat four over Morgan and Corbet, with Oldfield similarly unchallenged in taking heat five over Ayres and Butler.

The final heat delivered the closest finish of the night as Newton chased down Trent Vardy to edge ahead for the first time as they swept under the chequer, with Titman a distant third.

The B Main proved particularly problematic for the father-son team of Tony and Daniel Bridge, with both cars finishing on the infield in less than pristine condition. Daniel exited early when he slid to a halt against the infield fence in the main straight, while Tony crashed out with five laps remaining after initial contact with James Matthews in the main straight was followed by a moment in the back stretch that resulted in Brad Keiler getting upside down. Out front, Stewart was untroubled in taking the race ahead of Bell and Nathan Pronger, with Tyler Stralow securing the final transfer spot in his first ever ECL Series outing. Having advanced from seventh to fourth with an outside swoop that belied his lack of experience, Luke Manttan lost his way in the wake of the restart and dropped to sixth behind Libby Ellis.

By virtue of his last-gasp heat win, Newton emerged as top qualifier for the Boss Hogg’s Dash, only to select a four-car inversion of the grid that would result in Oldfield sharing the second row as Morgan and Kelly inherited the top two spots. Kelly made no mistake from the outside front row and led throughout the six laps to lead Oldfield, Newton and Morgan to the flag. Titman, Corbet, Vardy and Butler rounded out the field.

The opening lap of the feature saw Kelly and Oldfield swap the lead a couple of times, but the latter was in control after two circulations and set about distancing himself from the field. Kelly looked comfortable in second spot until luck deserted him again and he found himself on the infield with 12 laps remaining, an incident in traffic also putting Mitch Gowland out of action. Racing resumed and, whilst Kratzmann was storming through the field behind them, the order at the front looked settled with Oldfield comfortably clear of Corbet and Titman. However, when Titman tipped over in turn four with just one lap remaining following some contact with Prosser, the green-white-chequer restart opened a two-lap window for Corbet to grab his maiden win. However, Oldfield was unstoppable and Corbet had to settle for second ahead of Prosser, who would subsequently be stripped of his result, moving Morgan into third ahead of the hard charging Kratzmann, who started outside the top twelve. Newton was next in line, followed by Ayers, Butler, Vardy, Hoffmans, Stewart, Stralow, Pronger and Dan Murray, leaving Prosser as the final finisher.

Super Sedans really delivered for round four of the McCosker Series presented by Integrity Extended Warranties, with a very strong field of drivers from Queensland and interstate serving up some quality racing.

It was a familiar face who prevailed in the opening heat, with Darren Kane winning in advance of Bob McCosker and Mitchell Gee.

Sean Black downed Tania Smith and Micheal Nicola in heat two, with Brad Pascoe victorious in heat three over Steve Jordan and Tyson Moon.

In a preview of how he intended to approach the feature race, Gee charged away from the outside front row in heat four, cuddling the cushion all the way to outpace Hayden Brims and Black.

Jordan advanced from position five to win heat five, with a runner-up result not enough for current national champ and series leader Matt Pascoe to secure a place in the Pole Shootout, while it was Archerfield debutante JJ Hamilton who finished third.

Interstaters dominated the final heat with Victorian veteran Nicola leading home NSW’s Tyson Moon and Tasmania’s Adam Beechey.

Justin Randall, David Musch, Sam Hughes and Colin Kaine filled the top four spots in the B Main to earn a place on the grid for the feature race, with Michael Taylor, Lee Noon, Daniel Taylor and a rotary-powered Michael Kendall missing the cut.

The opening round of the pole shootout saw Beechey and Brad Pascoe advance at the expense of McCosker and Moon, although neither would proceed any further as Gee and Nicola were quicker in round two and would take on Black and Jordan in the final clash. It was Black who emerged with the quickest lap to secure pole position and, with Gee to share the front row, the two former national titleholders in Jordan and Nicola would launch from row two.

At the drop of the green and with 40 laps in front of him, Gee left little doubt of his intentions, immediately taking the Barellan Freighters #11 Sweet up-track and, no doubt drawing on his Sprintcar experience, leaving the field behind as he ran the ragged edge in an exciting display. Black sat comfortably in second while Pascoe Jnr had disposed of both Jordan and Nicola within five laps to be third. The first interruption came on lap 14 courtesy of a spin from Harry Doyle and the race was halted again immediately upon resumption with Ty Pascoe parked in turn one. Back in the field, Hayden Brims and Matt Pascoe were exploring the highline in a bid to advance their position, only for Brims to spin and exit the contest on lap 19, bringing Gee back to the field once again for a restart. Having advanced from 10th to sixth, Kane stopped in turn four with 15 laps remaining and it was in the laps following the restart that Gee started to look vulnerable. With nine laps remaining, Black pounced to seize the lead as Gee refused to budge from his close proximity to the wall. With five laps to run, Pascoe Jnr also slipped ahead of Gee and, with a gap back to the rest of the field, Gee finally conceded and dropped into line behind the front pair to ensure a place on the podium. In securing the win, Black became only the second driver to win a McCosker Series feature race so far this season Nicola finished where he started in fourth, followed by Moon, Jordan and Randall, whose surge through the field would see him advance eleven positions. McCosker, Beechey and Zac Brims were next in line, while Pascoe Snr could do no better than 11th, such is the depth of talent in the category at the moment. Hughes, Smith, Hamilton and Kaine were the remaining finishers.

Mitchell Rooke raced away to win the opening Compact Speedcar heat race from Shaun Robinson and Luke Williams, while Andrew Parkes would emerge the victor in heat two, downing Trent Usher and Richard Trainor.

The second round of heat races would get underway with Matt O’Neill proving too pacey for Victoria’s Trevor Perry, with Usher nabbing third on this occasion.

In the final heat of the night, it was defending champion and current national titleholder Justin Paull who triumphed, with Treanor and Parkes in the minor placings.

The Donnybrook Gel Blasters Queensland Compact Speedcar Championship feature race proved somewhat anti-climactic, which doesn’t diminish from the sterling drive from Parkes to lead all 25 laps in securing the crown. Having started sixth, O’Neill would fight his way forward to assume the runner-up position on lap 12, leaving Treanor and Usher in a fight for the final place on the podium. It was Treanor who prevailed to secure third, with Usher fourth and the best placed of the interstaters in Perry completing the first five ahead of Kyle Sharpe and Paull, who certainly made every effort to advance with some outside runs that often looked promising but failed to propel him forward. Ben Fairfax, Jeremy Ennever and Brock Byrne filled out the top ten.

The Crete 4 U Formula 500 Series feature race saw Boyd Chaffey street the field for an emphatic win, leading every lap from pole position to defeat Liam Williams, who bounced back from some setbacks earlier in the night, with Brady Argles home in third. Next came Queensland champ Kaydon Iverson, followed by Kinser Claridge, Tom Partington, Brock Thornton, Ronnie Barber, Mark Farmer and Wayne Jukes.

Iverson won the opening heat from Thornton and Chaffey, who would then outpace Argles and Claridge to win heat two to secure pole position for the main event. The final heat of the night went the way of Williams over Partington and Amanda Chaffey.

Heat wins in Open Sedans B were shared between Ronnie Young and Tim Swart, with the latter also taking the feature race ahead of Troy Price and Haiden Grantz.

Open Sedans A heat winners were Gary Kivella and Robin Bains, but it was Andrew Craft who upstaged them both to win the feature race. Jamie Olsen snared second ahead of Bains and Kivella.

The next meeting at Archerfield Speedway is Saturday, December 10 featuring round three of the East Coast Logistics Sprintcar Track Championship, plus Midgets, Wingless Sprints, AMCA Nationals, Open Sedans and Formula 500 Juniors.
