Fresh off his 360 Sprintcar Gold Cup victory just one week prior, Jordyn Charge kicked things up a notch yet again last Saturday night during the fifth Eureka Garages & Sheds Series round at Wangaratta City Speedway, winning his maiden feature race in 410 Sprintcar competition.

Despite heading into last Saturday night’s event with added confidence courtesy of his Gold Cup glory, Charge knew that a podium result, let alone a win, would not be an easy task against the formidable field of 410 Sprintcar drivers he was facing.

Lining up on the outside of the second row for the 30-lap feature race by virtue of placing fourth in the pole shootout, the determined 20-year-old wasted no time in making his move, taking over second place on the opening lap and quickly setting about his task of chasing down race leader Bobby Daly, who has been in solid form so far this season.

It was in lapped traffic that Charge really came to life on what was a challenging track, navigating the cars with great finesse and eventually managing to pip his more experienced counterpart at half-race distance.

From there, Charge refused to put a foot wrong, driving with clean lines and maintaining his composure in order to retain the lead, going on to greet the chequered flag in first place and refusing to slow down until he knew the final lap was behind him.

“The moment I realised I won was a pretty spectacular moment for me and taking the chequered flag was fairly surreal,” expressed Charge, who got his night off to the best possible start by winning his opening heat race before going on to place seventh in the other.

“When you’re going up against guys who have been racing for a lot longer than you and have so much more experience, it’s hard not to second guess yourself a bit, but we really tried to put all of that aside and focus on what we needed to do, which paid off in the end.”

Quick to praise his team and supporters, Charge gives much credit to his crew chief Kev, whose assistance throughout the past few race meetings has made all the difference.

“Kev has come on board in recent race meetings to help us out with setup and share some of his knowledge, which has been extremely helpful and has allowed me to become more involved and more equipped to dictate setup changes and read the track,” added the Melton, Victoria-based racer.

“Having rebuilt the car over the off season, we’ve really set ourselves up for success and all of that hard work is paying off. I can’t thank my team, family and sponsors enough for their continued help and support. It’s definitely a team effort!”

Making his way up the Eureka Garages & Sheds Series point standings from ninth place to fifth, Charge is eager to continue his upward climb in future rounds, while also turning his attention towards some upcoming blue-ribbon events such as the Grand Annual Classic at Warrnambool’s Premier Speedway in January and potentially the Australian Championship in Tasmania.

For his next appearance, Charge will be looking to continue his front-running form during the annual Max Race for 410 Sprintcars at Premier Speedway this Saturday night.
