Winning any race meetings for a junior racer is always an exciting achievement, but Junior Formula 500s racer Blake Matthews took things one step further recently when he carved his name into the history books as the first driver in his class to win a feature race at Sydney’s Valvoline Raceway.

Considered one of the country’s premier speedway venues, Valvoline Raceway is a regular stomping ground for the majority of Australia’s best speedway racers from sedans through to Sprintcars, so for Matthews, the opportunity just to race at the track, let alone win there, was an exciting one.

Having gotten his competitive racing career underway at the early age of 10 competing in go karts on the tar circuits, as well as Speedway Karts, both of which saw him pick up numerous feature-race wins, Matthews eventually made the transition into Junior Formula 500s last wins, continuing his success with more victories throughout NSW and Queensland.

Achieving this significant milestone in just his second season with the class, the young Kings Langley, NSW-based teen is beginning to create quite the reputation for himself amongst the speedway community, going on to claim another feature-race victory at Tamworth’s Oakburn Park Speedway last weekend.

Being a regular visitor to Valvoline Raceway since age three, it’s been a long-time dream of Matthews to one day visit the podium, and for the talented racer to exceed that dream is an accomplishment he won’t soon forget.

“I’ve grown up seeing all of the big names in speedway race at Valvoline Raceway, so to do what they’ve done and win a race there is really special,” expressed the 13-year-old, who has even been offered a drive by 410 Sprintcar driver Troy Little in the future.

“We’re really excited for the rest of the season and hopefully we can keep running towards the front of the field.”

For his next appearance, Matthews will return to Valvoline raceway on the Saturday night of November 9.
