• Local Riverland veteran Steve Heinrich finished the season in style as he added his name to the winners list of the Steve Butcher Street Stock Memorial at the Sunline Speedway at Waikerie on Sunday. In what proved to be a twilight feature event to end the South Australian season Heinrich led all 25 laps to defeat a fast finishing Nigel Reichstein and Cade Cox.

With Heinrich a clear leader throughout the real battle was for the runner-up spot with Reichstein, Mildura’s Trev Logan, Neville Nitschke and Cox involved in a race long battle. After an early half spin in turn two Reichstein had to work hard to eventually get back to the runner-up spot making his way to second before being put back two spots during a late race caution. But he didn’t stay in fourth for long as he charged back to second, but he simply ran out of laps as Heinrich took a well-deserved win.

Logan and Nitschke would round out the top five with Matt Maynard, Haydon Jolly, Wade Fell and Cheyanne Richter-Uren completing the finishers. For Richter-Uren it was a good day out as she also claimed the Street Stock Ladies Race for the second year in a row.

Earlier the heat winners were Nitschke, Heinrich and Phil Watson.

The day also featured the Sunline Speedway Modified Sedan Championship, Modlites, Super Sedans, Junior Sedans, AMCA Nationals and a healthy line up of Classic Sprintcars / Super Modifieds, who conducted a series of Demonstrations runs.

Unfortunately, by the end of the Modified Sedan feature only two cars were left running when the chequered flag fell with Trevor Raams defeating Mark Haseldine. Mildura’s Peter McCarthy was classified third while Paul Hayes had a massive roll over in turn two on the opening lap of the 15-lap race.

In the Super Sedans Michael Miller made a successful return to racing as he piloted the Steve and Wendy Stewart owned #47 to a feature win over Jason Gantz and Adrian Wright while South Australian Champion Darren McCarthy defeated Jason Robinson and Kelsey Allen in a spirited AMCA National finale.

Drew Flatman continued his recent dominance at the Sunline Speedway as he chalked up another win the Junior Sedans while Callum Crossing, Chelsea Gwynne, Ky McEwin and Damon Laan completed the top 5 in the 14-car field. Finally, Andrew Launer emerged victorious in the Modlites ahead of last start winner Justin Chadwick and Brian Chadwick.

The Sunline Speedway will now take a relatively long break with the opening meeting of the 2020 season being February 15 with the Australian 360ci Sprintcar Allstars along with a round of the Wingless Sprint Super Series.
