• Michael Gee is the next QLD Speedway legend to be honored by the Ultimate Sprintcar Championship at Hi-Tec Oils Toowoomba Speedway this Saturday night – October 6.

These days Gee is better known as the father of current QLD Sprintcar champion Mitchell Gee but Michael is very much a star in his own right on a national and state basis across a wide variety of categories.

As a teenager Michael made his debut in the Bomber division at the now defunct Surfers Paradise Speedway but two years later (now as a 19 year old) he moved into the Mini Sprints and won both the Rookie of the Year honors AND the QLD Club Championship!

He moved into the Litre Sprints in 1988 and spent an incredible eleven years there where he won two Australian titles and several NSW and QLD state titles before graduating to Super Sedans in 1999.

Sedans certainly suited Gee and after Weatherall Prestige Autobody purchased the first Super Sedan (an ex Jamie McHugh Ford Falcon) he claimed Rookie of the Year and then went on to win numerous titles and major races including:

    2005 QLD title
    2006 QLD title
2006/2007 Runner up NSSS (1st to clean sweep the triple header)
    2006/2007 Australian title (Kwinana Motorplex)

The year after was telling, as Michael explains.

“With Dave Weatherall selling his family business and the passing of “Rambo” our much loved crew member, a mutual team decision to cease racing in 2008 was made, as hard as it was it just didn't feel the same without Mark.”

The next few years was spent supporting and following young Mitchell’s kart racing but five years after ceasing Super Sedans another driving opportunity came up.

“In 2013 I had three meetings in a V8 Dirt modified for Gavin Rawlings (CONSOL racing) to make sure it was OK for Mitchell to do the following year,” explains Michael, “my highlight was finishing runner up to Kevin Britten in the 2013 Queensland title at Maryborough.”

In 2014 he drove a couple of meetings in a Modlite which he really enjoyed and finished runner up to Jamie McHugh in the QLD title at Toowoomba.

“Since retiring from driving I have thoroughly enjoyed being involved in speedway in a different role. Firstly to assist Gavin Rawlings set up the CONSOL Racing Sprintcar team and look after the team for two years and now of course be involved in the running of the Titan Racing Team has been very satisfying.”

As a crew chief Gee is making an impact too.

“The latest award I was awarded the 2017/2018 QLD Sprintcar crew chief of the year, which was by far the most emotional award I have ever received. To be able to work with Mitchell and achieve podiums including 2018 QLD title has been special. I can’t thank Reeve Kruck enough for this amazing opportunity.”

Looking back on his career milestones however Gee is most grateful for one thing.

“The biggest win in my speedway career is meeting wife Maree and having two great children in Mitch and Mikayla. So many friendships, marriages are started in speedway. I am always grateful for that.”

The Ultimate Sprintcar Championship QLD and Hi-Tec Oils Toowoomba Speedway are proud to announce Michael Gee as our second QLD Speedway legend for 2018/2019.

    Ends release…
