• With the nomination list continuing to grow for the 2018 Chariots of Thunder (COT) Sprintcar Series at the 7mate Northline Speedway in Darwin there are currently two drivers who standout as serious championship contenders. Warrnambool residents James McFadden and Tim Van Ginneken finished 1-2 in the series last year and they are set to resume their Top End rivalry again this year in the four-night tournament that will kick off on August 17 & 18.

As he did last season McFadden will enter the COT fresh from a racing stint in the USA therefore he will be race ready unlike his main rival from 2017 as Van Ginneken will make the trek to Darwin after more than 6 months on the sidelines. Last season Van Ginneken proved to be the surprise package of the COT pushing McFadden all the way for the overall honours, capturing the Northern Territory Title in the process.

“The main thing is to have some fun. If we come away with a few top 10 finishes would be good considering the competition that will be up there. I haven’t been in the seat since January and with a new car and team (Anderson Racing) it’s going to be a tough gig, but I proved last year James and his team are beatable, but everything must go your way on the night. Luck has also got something to do with it, but you have got to make your own and not rely on others. If we make all of the features and come home straight it will be a good time away” added TVG.

With McFadden currently racing professionally in Pennsylvania Kim Buswell, the Crew Chief of the #17 Monte Motorsports, is busy preparing the weapon of choice for this years COT with Buswell hoping for a repeat of last years success while at the same time using the early season hit out as a high-speed test session.

“James and our team thought last year’s Chariots of Thunder series was awesome, really well run and we thought it was a great event. The organisation and planning by the entire Chariots
team was a credit to all involved” commented Buswell in an appreciative manner.

“This year we will be coming back with our CS9 chassis. We were happy with how it performed last year and have made a few changes and want to try some different things out this year”.

With each of the four nights paying $10,000 to the winner it is no surprise that a team of the calibre of Monte Motorsports has been attracted to Darwin but the addition of the $20,000, win from the back bonus at the Pope 65 Race was a topic that got Buswell extremely interested.

“If we qualify for the Pope Challenge to win 30K there will be a few factors in play on the night that we will certainly have to take into consideration” added Buswell with a smile.

The 2018 Chariots of Thunder Sprintcar Series will be held over four nights kicking off on August 17 &18 and concluding on August 24 & 25, 2018.
