• Up against a tough field during last weekend’s two-night Thunder in the Canebowl event at Cairns International Speedway, youngster Kristy Bonsey achieved a new career highlight by becoming the first female Sprintcar driver to record a feature-race podium in Queensland in over a decade.

The 23-year-old racer from Jimboomba in the southern Queensland has continued to improve on her consistency and competitiveness throughout her four seasons in the class, but she hadn’t yet been able to reach the podium in the feature race, which over the weekend she managed to change.

Taking to the North Queensland track for the opening night of Thunder in the Canebowl competition, which featured two standalone feature races, Bonsey displayed this improved consistency from the outset, placing fourth and third in her heat races, which was enough to earn her a front-row start for the feature race, alongside one of the state’s leading drivers in Andrew Scheuerle.

Slipping back to third on the opening lap, Bonsey did well to hold off the likes of veteran Allan Woods and New Zealand visitor Jason Scott to retain her position through to the fall of the chequered flag and in doing so achieve her maiden Sprintcar feature-race podium.

“To finally reach the podium and be able to share it with one of the state’s leading teams in Ausdeck Racing is an amazing feeling,” expressed the pilot of the Qld # 42 Kart City / Total Parts Plus supported Eagle, who lined up sixth in Saturday night’s feature race, after placing second and eighth in her heat races, eventually coming home fifth.

“It definitely wasn’t easy, but our consistency throughout qualifying certainly helped us earn a great starting position for the feature race, which was key.

“This result would not have been possible with the support of Kris Jennings, who transported my car up to Cairns, along with my hard-working team and of course our valued sponsors.”

While Bonsey was bolstered with generous backing throughout the Thunder in the Canebowl event, it was the ongoing support from her dad Russell that she believes made her podium result a possibility.

“I can’t thank my dad enough for the incredible effort he always puts in and continues to put into my racing,” she praised.

“To see his face when I received my trophy was a special moment for me and I’m thrilled that I was finally able to reward him with this milestone.”

With her Thunder in the Canebowl podium being a fantastic way to break up her off season, Bonsey will be riding a wave of confidence heading into the upcoming 2018-19 season, where she is aiming to be consistently competitive at her home track: Brisbane’s Archerfield Speedway.

Ahead of the 2018-19 season, Bonsey is also currently seeking sponsorship. To register your sponsorship interest, please contact Russell Bonsey on 0416 024 300.

Bonsey would like to thank the following sponsors for their support: Kart City, Total Parts Plus, Russell’s Race Engines, and Stroud Homes.

Special thanks must go out to her dad Russell, Kris Jennings, her pit crew Declan Brownsey, along with Peter Mitchell, Heidi Jonsson, Allan Woods and all the track officials and volunteers for putting together a fantastic weekend of racing.
