• The 410 Sprintcars return to Cairns International Speedway with a bang during last Friday and Saturday night’s Thunder in the Canebowl event, supported by Ezilend and Integrity Extended Warranties, with the two-man Ausdeck Racing team ultimately achieving top honours on both nights of competition.

With Sprintcars not having visited the track in half a decade, there was much for speedway fans to be excited about and the Thunder in the Canebowl event certainly didn’t disappoint, having attracted significant spectator numbers and brought increased entertainment and revenue to the Far North Queensland town.

Due to nights one and two operating as two standalone feature races, there were twice the opportunities for drivers to prove themselves, and while many contenders came close to achieving victory, it was Ausdeck Racing team drivers Andrew Scheuerle and Stewart Craig who outraced their rivals on both Friday and Saturday nights respectively.

After a strong qualifying performance throughout Friday night, Scheuerle could not be stopped in the 15-lap feature race, going flag to flag to take a convincing win, while Craig clinched the runner-up spot, after coming out on top of an early battle with Kristy Bonsey on the opening lap.

Although she wasn’t able to hold off Craig at the drop of the green flag, a composed race rewarded Bonsey with her maiden feature-race podium with the 410 Sprintcars class, coming home in third place ahead of veteran Allan Woods and New Zealand visitor Jason Scott, who rounded out the top five.

Luke Dougherty, Gary Finglas, Kris Jennings and Cairns International Speedway President Zack Howell completed the remaining finishers.

Unfortunately for Andrew Corbet, he was unable to start the feature race due to mechanical issues.

Previewing what would become a common theme throughout the event, the early stages of Friday night saw Stewart and Scheuerle top time trials; however, the pair didn’t have it all their own way in the heat races. While Scheuerle drove to victory in the opening heat race, Scott refused to be discounted, coming away with a narrow victory from Scheuerle.

Returning to the track on Saturday night, the 25-lap feature race was a memorable one for Craig, who managed to switch places with his teammate to claim top honours in the 25-lap feature race after leading from start to finish, collecting his maiden 410 Sprintcar feature-race victory in the process, which he celebrate with a ‘shoey’ following the race.

Home in the runner-up spot less than a second later was Scheuerle, who had been sitting strongly in second place for much of the feature race after overtaking Woods for the position on lap five, with the latter being forced to settle for the final place on the podium.

Bouncing back from Friday night’s misfortune, a consistent race from Corbet saw him retain his fourth-place starting position, followed by Bonsey, who was one of three drivers who had suffered a DNF in the pole shuffle, Scott, Dougherty and Howell, who completed the remaining finishers.

Following premature retirements in the pole shuffle from both Finglas and Jennings, Finglas was forced to pull to the infield after 14 laps, while Jennings was unable to start the feature race.

Earlier in the night, heat-race wins went the way of Scheuerle and Corbet, while continued his pleasing run to win the pole shuffle ahead of Craig, Scheuerle and Woods.

With the Thunder in the Canebowl event being a great success for competitors and spectators alike, Cairns International Speedway hopes to bring 410 Sprintcars back to their venue on a more regular basis in the future.

In addition to major sponsors Ezilend and Integrity Extended Warranties, Cairns International Speedway would like to thank each of their associate sponsors for their support of the Thunder in the Canebowl event.
