• Proving his versatility as a driver, Jock Goodyer not only experienced a fruitful 2017-18 season in the Formula 500s class, he also managed to close his debut 410 Sprintcar season in the best possible fashion last Saturday night at Hobart Speedway by scoring his maiden feature-race win in the class.

With only a dozen shows under his belt in 410 Sprintcars so far, the 17-year-old racer, who recently took out the Tasmanian Formula 500 Title in what was his first ever attempt in the event, began to cement his status as an up and coming front-runner during a recent visit to the mainland where he participated in the Easter Trail, placing a pleasing sixth in the third and final round at Warrnambool’s Premier Speedway.

Knowing that he was on the cusp of breaking through for his maiden feature-race victory off the back of his penultimate outing for the season at Carrick Speedway, where the Tas # 22 D&B Goodyer Developments supported Maxim racer qualified on pole position before suffering an unfortunate flat tyre which put him out of contention, Goodyer was determined to close his season with something to celebrate.

Getting his night off to the best possible fashion by picking up quick time in time trials, Goodyer continued to display his superior pace in his opening heat race, coming away with the win and also recording a new one-lap track record in the process with a 11.534 second lap in the process.

Starting on the inside of the front row after placing fourth in his final heat race, Goodyer couldn’t be stopped throughout the 20-lap feature race, leading from start to finish, despite experiencing some slight pressure from Nick Penno while being held up by a lapped car in the final two laps.

Further proving the level of young talent on the current Sprintcar scene, Goodyer was joined on the podium by fellow youngsters Penno and Tate Frost, whose combined ages total just 53 years.

“We’d been up the front for the past few races and it felt like a feature-race win wasn’t too far away, so to finally get it done was a great feeling,” expressed the Launceston, Tasmania resident, who was undefeated in his home state in the Formula 500s class this season, racking up a whopping nine feature-race wins.

“I’ve absolutely loved my first season in Sprintcars and I think my experience on the mainland earlier in the season has really helped me to develop my race craft, so that’s something we’ll definitely look at doing more of next season.

“None of this would be possible without the amazing support from my family, my crew and all of our sponsors, so I have to say a huge thank you to them for all of their efforts throughout the season.”

Planning to contest the full 2018-19 schedule in 410 Sprintcars, as well as travelling to the mainland again, Goodyer also plans to defend his Tasmanian Formula 500 Title, amongst other events.

Goodyer would like to thank the following 2017-18 season sponsors for their support: D&B Goodyer Developments, and IM Tiling. He would also like to thank his mum and dad (Belinda and Darren), sisters (Brooke and Abbi), his sister Abbi’s boyfriend and Formula 500 crew chief Louis Maney, Sprintcar crew chief Jackson Davies, his girlfriend Bianca Mostyn, Allan Joyce, Ian McLeod and Scott Ryan.
