• In a program that will now also feature round eleven of the East Coast Logistics Sprintcar Track Championship that was postponed from last weekend due to inclement weather, the Australian Modlite Championship will be decided at Ausdeck Patios Archerfield Speedway this Saturday night (March 3). Wingless Sprints will also feature, along with the Sprintcar Development series and track championship events for Open Sedans. Originally set to be decided at Tamworth in New South Wales in January but cancelled with only a few days notice, the Australian Modlite Championship found a new home at Archerfield and, as a result, 24 cars from Queensland and interstate will do battle to secure the #1 status for the next 12 months. In Sprintcar action, nearly 40 cars will hit the track in an effort to take full advantage of the absence of championship leader Luke Oldfield, who is unable to make the rescheduled event.

With Oldfield absent, his nearest rivals in Andrew Scheurele and Mitchell Gee will be set to pounce and take over the series lead. The pair shared the podium with Oldfield at the last round and they currently sit second and third overall in the championship standings but, given the fact that Oldfield won the championship last season despite missing a round, they will need to take maximum advantage of this opportunity and lead the field home. At the moment, Scheuerle sits 33 points behind Oldfield with Gee another 38 back in third spot but just 8 ahead of Ben Hilder. Completing the top ten in the series standings at the moment are Peter Lack, Callum Walker, Brent Kratzmann, Mark Pholi, David Whell and Brad Ayers, all of whom are amongst the nominations this week.

Round four winner Allan Woods, former track champion and Australian Open winner Bryan Mann and the likes of Darren Jensen and Mick Sauer are proven spoilers who, if they produce their best form, could disrupt the championship ambitions of those currently sitting at the top of the standings, while Nelson Reddacliff, Andrew Marks and Mitch Gowland sit poised and ready to reap the reward if any of those sitting inside the top ten should falter.

The biggest field yet will contest the Sprintcar Development Series, with former Lightning Sprint racer Peter Campbell looking to continue his domination. Whilst another win might be the catalyst to see Campbell join Kris Jennings in making the step up into the East Coast Logistics series, this might be his toughest challenge yet as he faces off against the likes of Jason King, Brendan Claridge and Liam Atkinson.

Since clinching the Australian Modlite Championship in Whyalla (SA) last season, Aaron Prosser has really struggled to reproduce his title winning form at home and will need to bring his best if he is to defend his crown against the likes of former champion Terry Leerentveld and the current Queensland and New South Wales champion Klinton Hancey. As the standout performer so far this season, Hancey has accumulated numerous feature race wins at Archerfield and elsewhere, usurping Leerentveld as the standard-bearer for the category and, as a result, he heads into this weekend’s event as a firm favourite. However, the vagaries of racing dictate that anything is possible and with the Modlite ranks now more competitive than ever, Prosser, Leerentveld and Hancey will encounter plenty of resistance in their pursuit of more championship success. The likes of Sean Rose, Kyle Honour, Scott Lehfeldt, Neil Gregson, Sam Gollschewsky and former Queensland champ Will Butler are amongst those capable of racing their way to the front to clinch the most prestigious event of the season.

A 14-car field will contest round nine of the Ian Boettcher Race Parts Wingless Sprints Club Championship with the winners of the previous two rounds in Brant Chandler and Cody OConnell facing off again. It is OConnell who currently leads the championship chase ahead of Chandler and Paul Robinson, who has finished runner-up in the last two rounds and will be desperate to upstage his rivals this weekend. Brian Dixon, Brad Keiler and Josh Dreaver occupy fourth through sixth in series points and are faced with the daunting prospect of outpacing the lead trio if they are to make any progress in the championship standings.

Open Sedans complete another packed program of speedway action, which gets underway with early racing from 4.30pm. Sprintcars will hit the track for time trials from 5.30pm and the main program featuring the Australian Modlite Championship will kick off at 6.00pm.
