• JAMES McFadden had the perfect start for his 2017-18 Australian season when he won the Scardifields Smash Repairs King of Wings at the Perth Motorplex on Saturday night – round 3 of the AHG Sprintcar Series.

In the stunning new-look Milwaukee-backed W17, McFadden started from P7 and gradually made his way forward to take the win from Shaun Bradford and two-time defending series champion Brad Maiolo.

The race ran non-stop for 30 laps on a track that was heavily watered the day before and even early on race day, helping McFadden shave more than 30 seconds off the track record that has stood for some time.

It was a strong finish after a tough start that saw McFadden claiming the 17th quickest time in qualifying.

He then started from pole in his heat race and romped away to a win, setting up a feature race start from the inside of the fourth row.

As the field formed following the four-wide salute to the fans Jason Kendrick was experiencing engine issues in the W11 and opted to start at the rear in a short-lived campaign that saw him parked after just a few laps.

Carl Dowling, who started from P4, also dropped back early in the race.

Bradford on the other hand, was the early bolter and keen to capitalise on his win in the season-opener at the Motorplex back in late October.

He was up into lapped traffic after just four laps with Kye Scroop, who started from P2, looking strong in the early stages

Brad Maiolo, who started P3 slid under Scroop in lap eight, with McFadden putting a similar move on Scroop not long afterwards to take third.

McFadden then disposed of Maiolo and set his eyes on Bradford who had set a cracking pace out in front in the W57.

Bradford claimed the quickest lap of the race, on lap two, with a solid 13.633 second effort.

McFadden opted to run a lower line than Bradford as he reeled him in and after planning his move for a couple of laps, made the telling slide down low on lap 20, before shutting the gate on any counter attack and setting up the win.

Bradford held on for a solid second to be 0.554 of a second behind the winner, with Brad Maiolo 3.5 seconds behind McFadden for third.

Daniel Harding, who started from P6, looked strong, particularly in the latter stages, to take fourth, while Jamie Maiolo took fifth- after starting fifth.

Sixth was Mitchell Wormall who was doing double duty (also racing a 360 car) and followed over the line by James Inglis, Andrew Priolo, Carl Dowling, last round winner Jason Pryde, Scroop, Adrian Haywood, Jamie Oldfield, AJ Nash, Scott Chatwin, Robert Mould and Matthew Cross.

Kendrick was the only DNF with Kaiden Manders and Darren Mewett being non-starters.

Dowling was the latest winner of the Victory 1 Performance Quick Time, with a 13.402-second lap being the benchmark in qualifying, ahead of Bradford’s 13.632 and Wormall’s 13.767.

McFadden won the first heat of the night from Inglis, Jamie Maiolo, Pryde, Dowling, Priolo, Nash, Wormall and Cross, with Kendrick posting a DNF.

Heat two went to Bradford from Brad Maiolo, Scroop, Harding, Oldfield, Mould, Mewett and Chatwin, with Manders being a DNF.

Round four of the series will be held at Quit Bunbury Speedway next Saturday night.
