• After an impressive and consistent performance throughout last weekend’s 2017 Easter Sprintcar Trail, youngster Rusty Hickman’s Easter campaign ended on a high, with a pleasing runner-up finish in the third and final round at Warrnambool’s Premier Speedway.

Continuing to improve throughout each of the three consecutive nights of racing, the 17- year-old from Bendigo certainly made his presence known at Premier Speedway, qualifying in pole position for the feature race, by virtue of a win and a fourth-place finish in his heat races.

Losing out to Jack Lee off the start, Hickman fought for a podium position, slipping back to third on lap nine, before once again taking over second place with eight laps to go.

Managing to keep his composure amongst immense pressure from his rivals, Hickman was very pleased to greet the chequered flag in second, with the result giving both him and his team a great deal of confidence in what has been their first full season with the class.

“It’s a great feeling to have been able to put it on pole position at Premier Speedway and go on to finish second against the calibre of drivers I was up against,” commented the Vic # 40

Hickman’s Tree Maintenance supported J&J machine pilot, who has gone from strength to strength during a season which has been interrupted by a neck injury.

“Full credit to the team for all of their hard work, in particular dad, who plays a huge part in getting the car ready for me to race. The car felt fantastic and was really consistent all weekend, with everything coming together for us in the final round.

“It was definitely a team effort and we’ll all take a lot of confidence out of this result, which we can hopefully continue to build on next season.”

Commencing with the opening round of the Easter Trail on Good Friday at Geelong’s Avalon Raceway, Hickman displayed solid pace from the outset, qualifying fifth for the feature race, where he was running seventh before suffering a DNF, due to contact from another
    competitor.

Backing up his performance the following night in just his second ever visit to Mount Gambier’s Borderline Speedway, Hickman once again qualified fifth for the feature race; a position he managed to retain, after a fierce battle with some of the country’s top drivers.

Further displaying his constant progression and speed, Hickman was the fastest driver overall in qualifying time trials at both of the Borderline Speedway and Premier Speedway rounds.

For his final 2016-17 season outing, Hickman will return to Avalon Raceway on the Saturday night of April 29, where he will contest the Diggers Cup for 360 Sprintcars.
