When the third night of the Geelong Harley Davidson Easter Sprintcar Trail rolls into Sungold Stadium, Premier Speedway, Warrnambool on April 16, a field of more than 50 Sprintcar Drivers will have so much to play for, but for one it looms as being an extra special pay day.

Warrnambool’s Darren Mollenoyux is the driver in question as he looks set to claim the 2016-17 Parr Motorsports USC Victoria Premiership, having contested every round of racing at Premier Speedway this season.

That is an important statistic with all drivers being afforded the luxury of being able to drop their worst round of the season, a luxury that most thought would benefit the drivers who were engaged with World Series Sprintcars or other racing commitments.

Molly has proven that his amazing consistency has literally condemned all his competition to bit players in the chase for the $10,000.00 pay day.

To put it in perspective the most points any one driver can claim on any given night of competition is 154 – 150 for the A-Main victory and four bonus points, should that driver lead the most laps of the afore mentioned A-Main.

From there second place garnishes 146 points, third 144 and so on, down through the A, B and C-Mains. Now those drivers that missed round of the Parr Motorsports USC Victoria Track Premiership can be expected to have a zero points haul deleted from their tally, as a part of the “Drop Your Worst Round” theory, Molly on the other hand currently has a worst round of 126 points or the equivalent of a 12th place finish – that result coming on January 21, Molly’s Classic qualifying night, an event that would eventually see him finish as runner-up to James McFadden.

So, what lays ahead for Mollenoyux, exactly what does he need to do to secure a $10,000.00 voucher to Parr Motorsports?

In a worst-case scenario, which would see Mollenoyux not take the green flag in any one of the A. B or C Mains, his total would be 1108 points for the season. This means that with Jamie Veal, who hasn’t nominated for Easter Sunday, currently sitting on 956 points, that veal would need to win the A-Main and lead the most laps to secure an additional 154 points to pinch the Track Premiership by just two points!

The next best in points currently is David Murcott on 906 points, meaning the Track Premiership is just beyond his reach with one round to go.

Somewhat amazingly James McFadden still holds a spot inside the top ten, despite having missed three rounds of competition, one due to World Series Sprintcars commitments in November and both March rounds due to American Racing duties. McFadden’s worst finish, in a season that has yielded wins on January 1 and again at the Classic, was two fourth place results!

The current top 10 in the point standings are as follows:

1. V52 Darren Mollenoyux 1108 points – 126 = 982 points.
2. V35 Jamie Veal 956 points – 0 points = 956 points.
3. V88 David Murcott 906 points – 0 points = 906 points.
4. V90 Corey McCullagh 994 points – 98 points = 896 points.
5. V47 Tim Rankin 804 points – 0 points = 804 points.
6. W3 Steven Lines 790 points – 0 points = 790 points.
7. S45 Jake Tranter 784 points – 0 points = 784 points.
8. V70 John Vogels 844 points – 84 points = 760 points.
9. V17 Dennis Jones 802 points – 54 points = 748 points.
10. W17 James McFadden 738 points – 0 points = 738 points.

So, with three nights of competition remaining, a host of interstate invaders hitting the track at Sungold Stadium, Premier Speedway, Warrnambool this weekend and a maximum of 154 points to be garnished by any one driver on any given night, plus the anticipated changes in certain drivers’ worst rounds, this is going to be one battle that won’t be decided until Easter Sunday night.

No matter what you have planned this Easter long weekend, be sure to be at Sungold Stadium, Premier Speedway, Warrnambool on Sunday night with gates opening at 3.00pm, an open pit party from 3 till 4pm with the on-track action commencing at 5.00pm.

The Sprintcars will be supported by the Super Rods as they battle it out for the Super Rod Cup while Profire Pyrotechnics will again put on a season ending Fireworks Display that will have to be seen to be believed.
