• Robbie Farr continued his reign as the South Australian Sprintcar Champion last Saturday night (February 25) as he survived a torrid 30 lap feature event at the Murray Machining and Sheds Speedway at Murray Bridge. After finishing third in the top 8 dash Farr consequently started third for the main event but after two major accidents on the opening laps Farr eventually took the green flag on the front row but he didn’t take the lead until lap 18 when race leader Luke Dillon succumbed to a deflating left rear tyre.

“Tonight, was one of those nights when you get the win even though you weren’t the best car out there. Luke was clearly had the better car but he had a tyre go down so I feel bad for him and his team but I will take it. After being rained out and having races cancelled due to the heat it was just great to back out there racing again” added Robbie on the podium.

Second place went to local resident Ryan Jones who threw out a final lap challenge to Farr but came up .174 of a second short of capturing his first State 410ci Title. On the podium, Jones conceded that he found the “rubber” on the bottom of the track a couple of laps too late.

Rounding out the podium finishers was former dual State Champion Matt Egel, who put in a mammoth effort along with his Downing Brothers Racing crew to even get back on track after hanging the #97 Cool chassis on the turn 1 fence on the initial start, resulting in a 20-minute delay to event.

Once the car was removed from the fence the team, along with the assistance of Marcus Dumesny, set about rebuilding the car. Unfortunately, it appeared that they would miss the main as the race restated without them only to have Aidan Hall bring on the red lights again with yet another turn one accident. The additional time for the second red light allowed the team to finish the repairs with Egel re-joining the field at the tail without losing a lap.

The Hall incident also involved pole sitter Brad Keller, who restarted at the tail, only to retire shortly after as he broke the right rear shock in an incident with Brendan Guerin and Mark Caruso.

Fourth across the line in the epic final was Lisa Walker, but she was disqualified post-race as her car was under weight, therefore Todd Wigzell was credited with fourth in a career best with Jake Tranter, Jamie Cobby, Steven Caruso, Glen Sutherland and Guerin the only other finishers from the initial 20 drivers who took the green flag.

Mount Barker racer Craig Vanderstelt was another driver to roll out the final as he crashed in turn four on lap 11. It was during this red-light stoppage that the left rear tyre of race leader Luke Dillon really started to deflate.

Earlier in the night the six heat winners were Dillon, Keller, Farr, Sutherland, Hall and Sam Putland, Brad Keller won the top 8 dash while Hayden Pitt, Guerin, Ricky Maiolo and Steven Caruso were the four drivers to transfer into the final via the B-Main.

The fourth heat of the night saw the demise of Marcus Dumesny, who was driving the Green Brothers #74, as he crashed hard in turn four after pulling a monster wheel stand that later threw r-the car into a series of violet flips.

The Street Stocks also produced some entertaining racing with one of the best races the class has produced at Murray Bridge this season. The battle for the win in the 20-lap finale came down to the very last corner with Steve Heinrich getting the win as rival Nigel Reichstein spun out of contention eventually being credited with seventh. Second place went to Tony Prideaux with Cade Cox finishing in third.

The Super Sedan final went to current Track Championship points leader Paul Blenkiron ahead of Daniel Obst and Steve Schwartz.

The next meeting at the Murray Machining and Sheds Speedway will be on March 11 with the Ross Wright Sprintcar Memorial, 360ci Sprintcars and the South Australian V8 Dirt Modified Title. The Ross Wright Memorial will double as the USC SA Grand Final and Round 1 of the USC Chase.
