• It was Nathan Pronger who was victorious in last Saturday night’s fifth round of the KRE F500 Championship Series at Brisbane’s Archerfield Speedway, after race leader Liam Williams suffered an upsetting engine failure on the final lap.

While Pronger qualified in pole position for the 15-lap feature race, it was current and two-time Australian Champion Williams who impressed in the early stages, powering through the field from his eight-place starting position to steal the lead from Pronger on lap five, as well as setting a new one-lap track record with a 13.222 second lap.

Williams was on his way to a convincing victory when his engine failed on turn one of the final lap, relegating him to fifth as he managed to roll his car across the finish line in what was a disappointing end to what it seemed would be a fantastic night. Capitalising on Williams’ misfortune, Pronger went on to take the chequered flag ahead of Kaydon Iverson and James Kennedy in second and third place respectively.

Charlie Brown and a limping Williams rounded out the top five ahead of remaining finishers Kristin Brown, Tristan Johnson, Tomas Partington, Bryn Upshall, Piper Ogilvie, Graham Williams, Royce Harvey, Glen Douglas and Paul Chaffey.

Newcomer Cameron Bertuch was forced to the infield with fuel issues bringing his night to a premature end, along with Ethan Eyears, who broke a throttle cable, Robert Kite and Vicki Canfield. Canfield’s night was plagued with ongoing electrical issues.

Earlier in the night, heat-race action saw four different racers drive to victory, with Charlie Brown, Pronger, Williams and Iverson taking a win apiece. Williams’ night got off to a rough start, experiencing issues in his opening heat race, unfortunately foreshadowing what was to come.

The sixth round of the KRE F500 Championship Series will be held at Archerfield Speedway on Boxing Night (December 26).
