• Rain has played havoc on Queensland speedway in recent weeks, leaving competitors and fans frustrated and hankering for some on-track action. Well, Queensland’s premier Sprintcar venue is offering a feast of racing this Saturday night (December 10) with more than 30 drivers nominated for round six of the East Coast Logistics Sprintcar Track Championship at Ausdeck Patios Archerfield Speedway. Yes, that’s right, more than 30 drivers for a track championship round, plus big fields of Formula 500’s and AMCA Nationals, with Lightning Sprints and Wingless Sprints also on the program.

At the last meeting here two weeks ago, Luke Oldfield was superb in his drive to victory in round three of World Series Sprintcars and even though this weekend will see even more cars on track, Oldfield will be riding a wave of confidence that might just carry him all the way to victory lane once again. There are few certainties in Sprintcar racing, but you can bank on the fact that Oldfield, who is the only driver in the field to have won multiple feature races so far this season, will not temper his hard charging style in his pursuit of further success. The quality of the opposition Oldfield will encounter on Saturday night ensures that any replication of his WSS success will require the utmost preparation and skill combined with a little bit of luck.

Both defending track champion Andrew Scheuerle and former champ Bryan Mann are still chasing a second feature win for the season, with Mann taking out the last completed round here on October 29. Both drivers were also strong in the WSS round, although Mann would ultimately finish on the infield as Scheurele sailed to a fourth-place finish. Mitchell Gee, Kevin Titman, Peter Lack, Ben Hilder and Jayden Peacock all finished inside the top ten in the WSS feature and this quintet, along with Callum Walker (who finished 11th), will be determined to transfer that form into a feature race win.

In addition to seeing Super Sedan star Darren Kane and Dirt Modified dominator Kevin Britten face off in Sprintcar competition, race fans will also get to witness several drivers making their Sprintcar competition debut on Saturday night. Neil Howard, Tim Ford and former Junior Sedan and Formula 500 racer Cody Maroske are the latest additions to the ranks, joining an impressive batch of rookies that includes Kane, Britten, Brett Minett, Andrew Corbet and Mitch Gowland.

In round five of the KRE Race Engines Formula 500 Championship Series, national champion Liam Williams will be looking to continue the form that has seen him dominate the season thus far. Despite some very strong opposition that includes the likes of Kaydon Iverson, James Kennedy, Charlie Brown, Kristin Brown, Tristan Johnson and Ryan McNamara, Williams is chasing his fifth Archerfield feature race success for the season and is fresh from a win in the Jack Willsher Cup in Warrnambool.

Round three of the Shock Absorber Therapy AMCA Nationals Track Championship will see 17 cars do battle, including Australian champ Matt Hardy and Victorian titleholder Steve Potts, who won the previous round. Jason Molle, Thomas Vickery, Matt Enders and Jason Dreaver, who drove splendidly in the previous round to relegate Hardy to third, are the quartet most likely to spring an upset.

Having outpaced all-comers to win the annual 50-lap event here early last month, Harley Smee returns for another chance to upstage the locals in Wingless Sprint competition. Also travelling from south of the border are Jason Bates, John Slack, Matthew Walker, Kevin Willis, Mason Cattell and Natasha Herne. Leading the fight against the interstate invasion will be Adam Butler, Steve Thomsen, Cody O’Connell and Glenn Wright in what is shaping as a classic QLD vs NSW confrontation.

Dave Fanning and Australian champ Kurt Wilson have dominated Lightning Sprint competition so far this season and their rivalry will continue on Saturday night as Fanning chases his third consecutive feature race win.

Gates open at 4.00pm and early racing kicks off at 4.45pm, with Sprintcar time trials from 5.30pm. The main program, featuring East Coast Logistics Sprintcars, Formula 500s, AMCA Nationals, Wingless Sprints and Lightning Sprints, will get underway from 6.00pm.

Also, the kids pushbike race is on again, giving young speedway fans a chance to strut their stuff on the Archerfield track.
