Australia’s premier season-long speedway sedan championship gets underway this Saturday night (October 1) when the Think Money Super Sedan Series rumbles into Bundaberg for the opening round of competition at Carina Speedway. Featuring a surfeit of state and national championship winners in the 20-car field, the scene is set for a sensational start to the 13-round championship that will visit seven venues in Queensland and New South Wales.

Two-time national Super Sedan champion Matt Pascoe headlines the impressive entry list for the championship opener and whilst the Ipswich-based racer, who has also won this series previously as well as the National Super Sedan Series and the Queensland Championship, will head into the weekend as a warm favourite, he will certainly need to be in peak form if he is to prevail. With another Australian Championship winner in Steve Jordan, former New South Wales titleholder Ian Brims and two-time National Series champion Wayne Randall (who has four Queensland Championship wins to his credit) also in the field, the scene is set for a crackerjack contest on the Carina clay.

There is plenty of depth through the field, with former series champion Mark O’Brien also in action, along with two-time Queensland Modified Sedan champion Mark Pagel, who has also finished runner-up in the state Super Sedan title on two occasions, one of which was at Bundaberg. Other experienced racers in the field include Michael Hally, David O’Keefe, Tim O’Shea, Tony Brinkmann and Jack Childs, while Gladstone’s Bob McCosker (Development Series champion) and young gun Nicholas O’Keefe (Rookie of the Year) will be looking to build on the successes from last season that saw both drivers recognised at the championship awards ceremony.

Others hitting the track for the series opener include Josh McLaren, Dempsie Pails, Craig Shaw, Brian Grundy, Glenn Boulter and Sam Grundy. Local lad McLaren, who enjoyed a terrific debut season a few years back but has only raced sporadically since, will no doubt be looking for a strong showing on his home track to get his championship campaign off to the best possible start.

In addition to being the host venue for the opening round of the series, Carina Speedway will also host the final round of the championship on Saturday, May 27.
