• The RDS Northline Speedway in Darwin has taken the wraps off its upcoming Chariots of Thunder Sprintcar Series with $40,000 on offer over the four-night racing carnival. The series, to be staged between August 19 and 27, is expected to attract a number of interstate competitors who will be keen to take on the local stars as they battle for the Darwin Title, the Pope 65 Race and the Northern Territory State Championship.

The opening night of the Chariots of Thunder will take place on Friday August 19 with the Darwin Sprintcar Title. presented by C&R Construction, before the Saturday night show (August 20) will see the prestigious Pope 65 Race, with Bullseye Trading and Pitlane Liquor supporting the $5,000 to win event. The Pope 65 Race will see a special challenge on offer as the winner of the pole shuffle will have the opportunity to stat from position 11 and if they go on to win the A-Main they will receive a $4,000 bonus, therefore collecting a cool $9K for their efforts.

The following weekend (August 26 and 27) the Northern Territory Sprintcar Championship will go on the line with iFind Pipes and Cables getting behind the event as the naming rights sponsor.

Throughout the Series a number of contingency awards will also be up for grabs courtesy of KSA, Hoosier Racing Tire, Total Diesel Services, Auto Smart and Lubri Maxx.

It must also be noted that all four night of competition will also reward the 360ci drivers who elect to run against the open cars with the Friday night features rewarding the first 360ci driver across the line while the Saturday night races the top three will all receive extra prize money.

Although it is extremely early the Club is hopeful of attracting a field of over 20 cars with the strong local 410 contingent set to include last start feature winner Chace Karpenko, Jason Gebert, who is coming off a racing season in Sydney, Jason McIver, and rookie sensation Chris Harrison. A number of the local 360 competitors have already indicated that they will be in the starting line-up including Steven Ling, Simon Spitzbarth and Keith Phelps.

The Series has already gained the interest of teams from across the country with the Western Australian based Wormall Civil Racing Team and the Hickman Racing Team from Bendigo in Victoria set to head north to race during the Winter.

The Wormall Racing Team will head north with a three car assault on the Chariots of Thunder Series with team drivers Ben Ellement, Lee Nash and Mitch Wormill, while Darren Hickman will load up two cars, one for his 16-year-old Son Rusty and the other for lady racer Kristy Ellis.

“We are heading up to Darwin to get Rusty more laps under his belt as this will be a big season for him. He will be starting with a new 360ci engine and we will also have a 410 to try. We will also be taking Kristy Ellis along for some pre-season fun as the Ellis Team is yet to visit Darwin. I’m sure they will enjoy the experience and the hospitality of the NT crew and of course the warmer weather, With Steve (Ellis) and I driving the transporter up it should be a laugh all the way, I can’t wait” added Darren Hickman when asked about the upcoming trip north.

Last season the Hickman Team enjoyed some success at the Northline venue with their former driver Dion Bellman finishing on the podium on night 1 of the Australian 360ci Sprintcar Championship.

Western Australia’s Ben Ellement is also looking forward to the challenge ahead and he is hoping to get his association with his new team off to a winning start. “With my new deal with the Wormall Team I will be changing chassis and running different engines with a new KRE so we are going up there to test the waters. We talked a bit last year after Mitch was struggling a bit and he ended up running my car last year and that has led us to teaming up this season” added Ben as we spoke.

“I love Darwin, I love the track and I am really enjoying being part of this new race team. I have a new Crew Chief so it will be a great opportunity to gel before the Western Australian season”.

With nominations open until August 8 the competitor list will continue to increase over the next couple of weeks and during this time we will keep you fully up to date with who will be making the trek north for the 2016 Chariots of Thunder Sprintcar Series.
