• This Saturday night (May 28), rookie Sprintcar racer Lachlan McHugh is looking to create history by taking out the 2016 East Coast Logistics Crispy Memorial Sprintcar Series in his first full season of competition in Australias premier dirt track racing category. The Gold Coast-based teenager raced to victory in the penultimate round last weekend and will face off against Supercheap Auto series winner Andrew Scheurele and Queensland champion Luke Oldfield in a three-way fight for the memorial trophy. Whilst Scheurele looks to have a lock on the overall track championship crown and the Sprintcars Queensland Club Championship, McHugh currently leads the Crispy Memorial points by just 12 points heading into the series finale on Saturday.

Will McHugh triumph in his first season of competition? Can Scheuerle reel in the 12-point deficit and secure a trifecta of series titles for the season, or will Oldfield (who sits just three points further back in third spot overall) leapfrog both McHugh and Scheuerle to add the Crispy Memorial crown to his Queensland Championship triumph? So many possible permutations that the scene is set for a cracking conclusion to what has been a fabulous season of competition at Queenslands home of Sprintcar racing.

Of course, outside of the top three, there are several drivers will plenty to race for and for whom a feature win would be an ideal way to finish their season. Brent Kratzmann, for example, has been plagued by bad luck throughout the season and, following two consecutive top-five results, looked on track to secure a podium finish at the previous round, only to spin out of contention immediately after losing the lead. He will be determined to make amends this Saturday because a strong result could elevate him into the top four in the championship standings. Likewise, Richard Morgan needs to procure a strong result to consolidate his finish inside the top five in the series standings, a task that will be made a little easier in the absence of the Consol Racing duo of Mitchell Gee and Brandon Rawlings.

Unfortunately for Gee and Rawlings, their season has ended prematurely following the sale of the teams equipment. Both drivers have featured on the podium this season and have represented their team with a high degree of professionalism and passion. They are most appreciative of the opportunity that team owner Gavin Rawlings has provided in enabling them to live their speedway dream and either of these young men would be a quality recruit for any Sprintcar team looking to lift their level of success.

Others desperate for a reversal of fortune to end their season on a high include two-time Australian champ Dave Murcott and defending track champion Bryan Mann. Murcott has endured a miserable run of outs in recent weeks that have him languishing outside the top ten at the moment. Mann, meanwhile, topped qualifying last week but failed to make forward progress in the feature before contact with turn three wall sent him upside down and out of the race. Of the rest, Ben Hilder, Kevin Titman, Mark Pholi and round three winner Brent Aprile are chasing a top ten finish overall and, with Titman also sitting equal third with Mann in the club championship points, there is plenty at stake this Saturday.

Of course, the mighty Midgets are also closing out their 2015/2016 season this weekend with their annual 50 lap event, the richest event on their season schedule with $100 on offer to race leader on every lap. Yep, a $5000 bonus to anybody who can lead every lap of the event. Not surprisingly, a very strong field has been secured with drivers from as far afield as New Zealand and Western Australia amongst the 30+ competitor nominations.

Whilst current track champion Michael Kendall probably deserves the mantle of pre-race favourite given his domination of racing at Archerfield over the last few seasons, the level of competition he faces this weekend will be his toughest so far this season. New Zealanders Hayden Williams and Leon Burgess competed at Archerfield earlier this season and their return adds an extra dimension to proceedings as their experience and success in the ultra-competitive New Zealand Midget scene ensures they will be red hot contenders this weekend.

Four-time Australian champion Adam Clarke headlines the interstate contingent, with Aiden Corish and Jason Bell joining Clarke in trying to take the trophy back to New South Wales. Trekking all the way from Western Australia is the two-car team comprising Nicholas Rowe and Jack Black, while almost all of Queenslands big guns will be locked and loaded to fight off both the international and interstate invaders.

Of the locals, expect Queensland champion Michael Harders to be a contender, along with Brock Dean, Darren Vine, Ken Stanaway, Anthony Chaffey, former state champ Mark George, young gun Rusty Whittaker, the much improved Rodney Harders and the returning Troy Ware. In fact, such is the strength of the line-up, the only certainty is the quality of the racing that will ensue when these guys hit the track for 50 laps of action.

Also on the program will be AMCA Nationals, Modlites and Formula 500 Juniors, plus the crazy chaos of the Caravan, Boat and Dunny Derby and another spectacular Fireworks show.

Gates open at 4.00pm, with online ticket holder securing early entry from 3.30pm. Early racing gets underway at 4.30pm and Sprintcars will hit the track at 6.00pm, with adult tickets just $30.00.
