• The big events just keep coming at Ausdeck Patios Archerfield Speedway and this Saturday night (April 30) will feature another feast of dirt track action with a huge triple-bill program featuring Dirt Modifieds, the Queensland AMCA Nationals Championship and the final round of the Polar Ice Midget Track Championship.

Dirt Modifieds were here just two weeks ago and put on one heck of a show as young gun Lee McKinnell pounced when Australian Champion Kevin Britten crashed out while leading to score his breakthrough win in the category. Despite a remarkable run of success in the lead-up to their last Archerfield outing, Brittens hopes of a successful homecoming were dashed when he found himself upside down entering turn three soon after taking over the lead. However, he brushed aside his misfortune to subsequently win the Queensland Championship in Toowoomba last weekend, creating history as the only driver to win every state championship in a season. With McKinnell finishing second behind Britten in Toowoomba (and also finishing on the podium in the South Australian Championship), expect these two to again set the standard that others will need to surpass if they hope to emerge victorious. However, with three former national championship winners in the field, a cakewalk it will not be. Mark Robinson, Andrew Pezzutti and David Clark have proven they have what it takes to win at the highest level and will be primed to beat both Britten and McKinnell to secure a place on the podium.

Throw in the likes of Ray Klarich and Scott Conlin (who finished second and third behind McKinnell two weeks ago) plus Dallas Czerwinski, Garry Wathen, David Ohl, Sam Bruggy and Victorian visitor Dan Scott and there are plenty of possible permutations with regard to the final result in the 25-lap feature race.

In the Polar Ice Midget Track Championship, defending champion Michael Kendall is primed to claim yet another title. Whilst he has not been the dominant force we have seen in previous campaigns, Kendall has fronted for each round of the series and, more importantly, finished on the podium with far greater regularity than anybody else. Whilst there have been several drivers who have found form at various stages of the season, Kendall has been quick every time he has hit the track and that has proved the difference between the five-time New Zealand champion and his rivals. There is no better way to wrap up the championship than with a win in the Grand Final, so Kendall will be determined to keep his rivals at bay one more time.

Those most likely to rain on Kendalls parade are Queensland champion Michael Harders, who recently finished third in the Western Australian Championship and won the inaugural national Five Star Series, along with Darren Vine, Grant Draney, Ken Stanaway and Mark George. Vine and Draney shared the podium with Kendall at the previous round, Stanaway has a wealth of experience and George is a former state titleholder in good form, having finished third in the Danny Davidson Memorial in Toowoomba last weekend.

Not surprisingly, AMCA Nationals will present their biggest field of the season thus far for their Queensland Championship, including drivers from New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania trekking north to take on the local stars. In fact, half of the field will be from interstate, setting the scene for some frantic competition to secure a spot in the championship final.

Recently crowned Australian Champion Matt Hardy leads the local contingent into battle and will be ably assisted by proven feature race winners in Steve Potts and Steve Price, along with Archerfield regulars such as Michael Mason, Russ Hardy, Jason Dreaver and Jason Molle.

Of the interstate brigade, multi-state championship winner Tim Reidy is the best credentialed, with fellow Victorian Jamie Collins also a strong contender, while Raymond Kime, Stuart Hall and Tony Blanch are perhaps the best bets from amongst the 13-strong NSW squad.

Of course, in the heat of championship battle, anything can happen and it usually does, so the reality is that all of the 34 drivers contesting the event should fancy their chances, which all but guarantees that there will be no quarter given in the quest to be Queensland number one.

Queensland AMCA Nationals Championship nominations: Jim Knight (NSW), Raymond Kime (NSW), Darren Miller (NSW), Tony Blanch (NSW), Shane Newstead (NSW), Stuart Hall (NSW), Shane Anderson (NSW), Lewis Gamble (NSW), Tim Gamble (NSW), Matthew Gamble (NSW), Geoff Hayes (NSW), Peter Markulin (NSW), Paul Reeves (NSW), Steve Price, Matt Hardy, Russ Hardy, Michael Mason, Jason Dreaver, Steven Ward, Steve Potts, Peter Greer, Dean Ballard, Leonie Knight, Luke Geraghty, Thomas Vickery, Matthew Enders, Jason Molle, Kai Simmons, Luke Frenken, Rodney Bassett (TAS), Daniel Brooks (TAS), Jamie Collins (VIC), Tim Reidy (VIC).

Open Sedans, Ford v Holden v Sigma sedans and Formula 500 Juniors are also on the program, with gates opening at 4.00pm with early racing from 4.45pm. Midgets will kick off the main program from 6.00pm, with adult tickets just $25.00.
