• Wangaratta City Speedway this weekend play host to the first of its three state title events this summer when the ‘Rural City of Wangaratta’ supported Junior Standard Saloon title to be contested by more than twenty racers between the ages of ten & sixteen is held on a super program that includes round two of the Sports Sedan Darren Levy Memorial series, Compact Speedcars & all our other local heroes behind the wheel.

The Junior Standard Saloon Victorian title includes our local North East Drivers Rick McAuliffe, Janie Patton & Daniel Powell all Wangaratta member drivers along with Jack Milthorpe from Corowa. Milthorpe has been outstanding this season already however Powell is coming on quickly as a driver to be in contention on the biggest night of the season.

Wangaratta Club President John Patton was grateful for the support of the City. “Our patrons come into the city and support our local businesses, we are very pleased the City of Wangaratta offered to support our patrons like this. We have families that will be in town from Friday to Sunday this weekend as they do battle on track & they will spend money buying food, going shopping, having lunch, getting fuel & staying in accommodation in our great town.”

Patton went on to also share. “We would love to invite all our community to come and watch twenty plus young men and women try to become the Victorian champion on Saturday night. Our very own members will be up against Victoria’s best, there can only be one winner. You won’t be disappointed.”

Competition from Gippsland will be fierce with Matthew Bowers, Michael Hardy, Adrian Lawrence & Bailey Perkins all expected to figure strongly this Saturday whilst Alexandra club members Coby Elliott, Courtney Meakins & Ally Morrison will also be tough to dislodge from the final top five podium positions.

In Sports Sedans Lavington's Craig Cottier a winner at the first round, will find the going just as competitive this weekend with a few drivers from Melbourne up to have a run before their state title later in the season whilst the Powell brothers from Beechworth will be on his hammer also. Melbourne based Andrew Jordan has been in great form down at his home track, Rhys Collins is in a brand new car & Aaron Bunton from Nagambie returns to do battle. Daniel Unternahrer, Wayne Nelson & Martin Heiner are others that you could throw into the mix for the top three battle later in the final.

The Goulburn Ovens Sedans have their only hit out before the state title in April & a handy field will do battle with most of the drivers from Corowa & a couple from Leeton in NSW. Ross Maclean has been the stronger performer amongst the drivers entered however it is expected to be a great battle between he and Clint Henderson, David Walton, Mitch Watts, Mark Gordon & Tom Bowers for association points on offer.

Also competing for association points are the Compact Speedcars with Gavin Gay a strong competitor looking to get one over Geoff Meyers who won the Cardwell Cup at Wangaratta last month. Butch Hutchinson & Keith Astrella are in form whilst newcomer Dave May a state champion in Mini Sprints is one to watch.

There is something for everybody with Ladies Sedans, Standard Saloons & the Vintage Holden Humpy's also programmed and fans will enjoy a great night at the skids.

Gates to enter will swing open at 1pm for fans with racing from 4pm & enquiries can be made to 0427 308 976. The venue operates with a licensed bar & as such BYO is strictly forbidden.

Entry for the event will cost fans the following: Adults $20, accept for club members and aged/disabled who pay $15 & $10 for teenagers and young adults between 12 & 18 whilst under the age of 12 will be free entry.
