• The opening round of the 2015/2016 Supercheap Auto Sprintcar Track Championship on Saturday night (October 3) saw Andrew Scheuerle rediscover his winning formula to emerge victorious in the 30-lap feature event. Having gone all of last season without a feature win at Archerfield, it was the best possible start to the championship for the former track titleholder, taking his new Ausdeck Patios and Roofing Cool to the front at the drop of the green and leading every lap on a track that produced fast racing and plenty of passing.

Kevin Titman was the stand-out performer for most of the night, only to fall short at the final hurdle in finishing second behind Scheuerle. Titman topped qualifying, scored a heat win despite being at the back of the inversion and then took out the Lucas Oils Dash to secure pole position for the feature. He shadowed Scheuerle in the early laps, but lost contact as the laps wound down to ultimately finish three seconds adrift.

In the best ever result of his career, Andrew Liebke drove terrifically under pressure to finish in third spot, advancing from tenth and then withstanding the advances of numerous challengers to secure his first podium appointment. In fact, several of his pursuers clocked faster lap times during the race, but Liebke remained unfazed to see off each new challenger that emerged from the pursuing battle pack.

In the end it was Steve Johnson who emerged the best of the rest, edging out Brandon Rawlings, with Luke Oldfield surging back to sixth after a tyre change saw him relegated to the back. Lachlan McHugh, who had advanced from 15th to be running fifth at one stage, was next ahead of Dan Murray and Kristy Bonsey, with Jason Bottin rounding out the top ten. David Whell, Brent Kratzmann, Ben Hilder and Steve Greer were the remaining finishers.

With 10 drivers dipping below 12 seconds in Time Trials, it was Titman who bested the field with an 11.687 circulation to secure KRE Quick Time. Scheuerle was next quickest ahead of Mark Pholi, 16-year-old Callum Walker, Oldfield, Murray and another teenager in Mitchell Gee, whose feature race ended on lap two perched atop the turn two wall.

In winning the opening heat, Liebke clocked the fastest race lap of the night on his way to downing Johnson and Murray. Gee stormed home to win heat two over Greer and Oldfield, with Andrew Marks outpacing Hilder and Kratzmann to win in heat three.

Titman charged under Kristy Bonsey with just two laps remaining to win heat four, leading Bonsey and Walker to the chequer. Liebke did it again in heat five, keeping Scheuerle at bay on this occasion, with Scott Doyle third. The final heat saw Oldfield finish ahead of Greer and Johnson.

Fortune favoured Titman in the pre-race grid draw for the Lucas Oils Dash when he duly selected pole position and took full advantage to lead home Scheuerle, Hilder, Oldfield, Murray and Gee in the 6-lap sprint. Having declined to take the Kratzmann Caravan Challenge to invert the field, Titman started the feature race from pole position, but it was Scheuerle who proved too quick from the outside front row to find himself in the lead at the end of the opening lap.

In the opening round of the Polar Ice Midget Track Championship, it was Troy Ware who staked an early claim with victory in the 15-lap feature race. Defending champion Michael Kendall finished second in an unfamiliar mount, with Anthony Chaffey completing the podium. Grant Draney and a much improved Chris Singleton were next in line, followed home by Lance Towns, Darren Vine, Brad Young and Craig Smith in a depleted field.

Heat wins were shared between Draney, Ware and Kendall, who was driving for the Singleton team while his new car is readied and found himself disqualified from his opening heat when contact with Chaffey sent the latter into the wall.

Scott Farmer set the pace in the opening laps of the Formula 500 feature race before running too wide in turn two and allowing Queensland champ Kaydon Iverson to surge to the front in what proved the race-winning move. Kristin Brown zeroed in towards the end to finish a close second, with Ryan McNamara snaring third in advance of Phil Roberts, James Kennedy and Farmer.

Immediately after winning the Wingless Sprint feature race, Mitch Gowland had made a hasty exit from the cockpit when his car erupted into flames. Adam Butler and Glen Wright filled the minor placings devoid of any such drama, with Brad Keiler and Jason King completing the top five.

No surprise in the Modlite feature with national champ Terry Leerentveld proving too strong. Aaron Prosser challenged early but couldn’t keep pace with Leerentveld as the race progressed, while Alex Coward annexed third ahead of William Butler and Chris Crowe.
