• THE 2015-16 AHG Sprintcar Series in Western Australia is set to be a big one with the calendar being released by the Sprintcar Entrants Group.

The series will be similar to last year with the main series running from October 17 this year to March 12 next year.

“We believe it will be a big season and the early indications are that we will have more cars than last year with a few new guys coming in to be part of the premier domestic speedway series in the country,” SEG chairman Geoff Kendrick said.

“We are set to welcome drivers and teams who are stepping up from the 360 competition as well as others who will be new to our sport.”

Drivers will again have an opportunity to double their points in one of the qualifying rounds.

To play their Joker they need to announce their intention at the drivers’ meeting in front of their rivals at the start of the show.

Points in the series are only allocated on where the driver finishes in the feature race so if a driver players the Joker and wins the feature race they will get points equivalent to two feature race wins.

It’s a bold move if it pays off but there is also the risk that it could be a bad night for the team and they could not bank many points at all.

The last round for drivers to play the Joker is January 16 that is also the second night of the Australian Late Model Championship at the Perth Motorplex.

From there the teams will contest three rounds of World Series Sprintcars in Perth and one in Bunbury that will all be part of the AHG points before the series final on March 12.

On the strength of the mini-series at the end of the 2014-15 season the AHG Easy as 123 Triple Crown will return to round out the action in 2016.

“The Triple Crown was another thing we added last year and it has proved to be a great success,” Kendrick said.

“It generated a lot of interest and positive feedback from both racers and fans and we can’t wait for that to return.”

Kendrick said a lot of planning had been done again in the off-season.

“The success of the series is due to the whole SEG board constantly looking for fresh ideas to make the sport more appealing and not being afraid to try new things.

“Sometimes in the past we have copped criticism for things we have tried but it is all part of the bigger picture to make the product better for the fans and racers.”
