• Queensland champ Sean Iacono continued his stellar rookie season of Lightning Sprint competition with a terrific drive to victory in the 2014/2015 Australian Championship last night (June 20) at Ausdeck Patios Archerfield Speedway. The twice-postponed event was finally decided at the final meeting of the Archerfield season and the championship finale produced plenty of action with several restarts and three different drivers assuming the lead at various stages. Through it all, Iacono remained rock solid to ultimately finish more than 2.5 seconds ahead of Lismore flyer Kurt Wilson, who advanced from position six with a series of outside passes, including a sweep on Iacono that took him into the lead on lap 13, only to surrender his advantage on the next circulation. Further back, another rookie racer in Kirsty Kelly surged home to secure third spot after starting ninth, with Jim Kennedy and DJ Raw rounding out the top five.

Two-time champion Dave Fanning qualified on pole position for the 25-lap championship final and led the opening lap before retreating to the infield, elevating Iacono in to the lead. Having started seventh despite two heat wins, Wilson had progressed to third after just seven laps of racing and slipped into second spot on lap 11. Kelly, meanwhile, was making her own mark and had climbed into the top five after 11 laps before pouncing to depose both Kennedy and Raw on lap 14. Further back, Peter Campbell completed a remarkable recovery from a wild roll in his opening heat race to salvage sixth in the feature ahead of AJ McTaggart and Scott Genrich, with Keith Blatch and New South Wales champ Chris Davis completing the top ten.

Iacono looked sharp from the outset, winning the opening heat over defending champion Darren Salmon and Fanning.

Matt Geering won heat two from AJ McTaggart and Kennedy, with Wilson downing Blatch and Lindsay Clapham in heat three.

Fanning outpaced Raw and Iacono in heat four and then scored a runner-up result in heat five behind Wilson, with Salmon third.

Ethan Eyears looked to have the final heat in his keeping until any untimely spin just a few laps from home enabled Kennedy to snare maximum points in advance of Raw and Blatch.

Salmon’s championship defence ended on lap seven of the feature event when he rode the wall in turn two and flipped. Eyears, Clapham and Brett Davies also exited at this point and with Darren Dillon also retiring on lap 12, Dion Prowse remained as the final finisher in 11th spot.

In the Compact Speedcar feature race it was Emma Harris who triumphed after wresting the lead from Shane Malt on lap four. A terrific fightback after an early spin saw Dave Collins snatch second spot with a last lap pass on Malt, with Barry Gibbes and Graeme Flynn the only other finishers.

Brandon Burrows and Darren Silcock were the standouts on the 360ci Sprintcar events, winning a heat apiece before finishing first and second respectively in the feature event. Kristy Bonsey was the best of the rest in third spot, followed by Anthony Vanderreyden and former Modlite ace Dylan Menz in his first outing.

The Australian Championship feature for Ford vs Holden vs Sigma sedans saw Bernie Wright greet the chequer in first spot, only to be outed for a restart infringement that elevated Chris Berg to the top of the podium.

In the Open Sedans, it was Neil Crawford (B Grade) and Michael Taylor (A Grade) who shared the spoils in their Australian Championship features.

Brock Armstrong downed Aiden Weir, Scott Owen, Luke Gray and Brad Carroll in the Summerland Street Saloon feature race.

In the King of the Ring, Bruce Marshall prevailed in the AMCA National usually piloted by Peter Greer, with Glenn Willmott’s Open Sedan annexing second spot ahead of the Modified Sedans of Russell Harris and Luke Hollyman.
