• Race fans have every reason to be excited about what is on offer at Ausdeck Patios Archerfield Speedway this Saturday night (May 23), with a huge triple-header program featuring Super Sedans, Midgets and Modified Sedans. More than 70 drivers have nominated across the three categories and there are Compact Speedcars, Stockcars and Ford versus Holden versus Sigma sedans on the program as well.

Not surprisingly, Australian Champion Matt Pascoe has been the standout in the QA Developments Super Sedan Series this season and he heads into this final round with a solid lead in the championship standings. Pascoe leads a field of 20+ drivers into battle for their final show of the season and will no doubt find himself under plenty of pressure from those desperate to end their season on a high.

Leading the efforts to dampen Pascoe’s victory aspirations will be former national champion and current National Super Sedan Series titleholder Darren Kane. Like Pascoe, Kane is quite rightly regarded as one of the very best drivers in the country and his record of success is testament to such claims. Having also won the Australian Late Model Championship this season, Kane will face a much bigger challenge this weekend as he takes on a quality field of drivers from Queensland and New South Wales.

Former Queensland champ Matt Williams has been in very good form of late, capped with a victory in the previous round at Maryborough, while Ian Brims has been one of the most consistent drivers throughout the season, a runner-up finish at Maryborough the latest in a string of podium results. Of course, Wayne Brims is always a huge threat in Brisbane and finished third here at their last appearance, while the likes of Leigh Williams, Mark O’Brien, Sean Black and defending series champion Dale Christensen will also be in the mix. The unique format, which will see the top eight qualifiers undertake a random draw for their grid positions in the feature race, adds an extra dimension to proceedings that not only gives every driver a genuine opportunity to secure pole position but also provides plenty of excitement for race fans.

Meanwhile, in what is only their second appearance at Archerfield this season, more than 30 drivers from far and wide have nominated for the Modified Sedan Cannonball Cup. In a field filled with familiar names and newcomers alike, there are four Australian Championship winners and no less than seven state title winners amongst the entries. The star-studded line-up includes two-time national titleholder Todd Doyle and fellow national title luminaries Aidan Raymont, Max Clarke and Greg Worling, along with Toowoomba’a dynamic duo in Shane and Nathan McDonald. Throw in the likes of Mark Raymont, Allan Nash, Shannon Blackburn, Russell Harris, who was sensational here earlier in the season, and veteran David Jacobi, who finished third in this season’s national title in Tasmania, and the competitive racing for which the category is renowned seems a certainty, although the tendency for excessively aggressive competition often takes its toll on man and machinery, making it almost impossible to predict a winner with any degree of confidence. If all 32 nominated drivers make it onto the track though, rest assured that it will be action unlimited as they each strive to secure a place in the 30-lap Cannonball Cup feature race.

Following the incredible spectacle that was the 50-lap event staged two weekends ago, the Midgets now refocus their energies to the battle for the Polar Ice Track Championship with 15 drivers nominated for the penultimate round of racing. Michael Harders currently sits atop the points table and whilst he has the championship almost within his grasp, he knows that he cannot afford to take anything for granted when the likes of defending track champion Michael Kendall, Brendan Palmer, Darren Vine, Troy Ware and former Queensland champion Mark George are amongst those chasing victory on Saturday night. It has been a challenging season for Kendall but his superb drive in the 50-lapper suggests that both he and his #89 Race Safety Equipment Aggressor/Esslinger are back to their very best form, setting the scene for a thrilling conclusion to the series over the next two weekends. Can Harders keep Kendall at bay? Be at Ausdeck Patios Archerfield Speedway on Saturday night to find out.

Spectator gates will open at 4:00pm and there will be early racing on track from 4:45pm. The main program, featuring the QA Developments Super Sedan Series, the Polar Ice Midget Series and the Modified Sedan Cannonball Cup, will get underway from 5:30pm.
