• Cameron Gessner has finished a creditable second in the Australia Day meeting held at the Perth Motorplex last Saturday evening.

His record now stands at one win, two seconds and two thirds from the 10 rounds of the AHG Sprintcar Series held so far this summer.

Gessner started off the meeting by recording a lap of 14.767 seconds in the #41 Cowara Motorsport machine in the time trial which was the fourth fastest overall.

He started his first heat race on the front row of the grid and came home in third spot.

Next time out Gessner raced from position 8 to finish third.

He started out of position 3 in the 25-lap Main Event and was running fourth for the first part of the race.

On lap 8 he took over third position which he maintained until the last lap of the event.

Then the race leader - David Priolo - blew his left rear tyre exiting turn two for the final time, giving the race to Jamie Maiolo and Gessner moved up to second place.

When he returned to the pits it was obvious that he had only a small amount of tread left on his rear tyres.

"We are very pleased with the result," said Cowara Motorsport Team owner Steve Duggan. "The car had plenty of speed and Cam drove it very well on the night.
"It was a great result when you consider that our crew chief - Keith Giles - was over in Warrnambool working on American driver Daryl Pittman's car."

The meeting was the last chance for drivers to play their double point "Joker" card and third placed Shaun Bradford and the driver in fourth - Jason Kendrick - gained plenty of points on the night.

The result sees Gessner sitting in second place behind Kendrick in the AHG Sprintcar Series standings.

However, he is only six points behind the leader with three more rounds still to go.

Gessner has also increased his lead in the Perth Motorplex Track Championship.

The next round of the AHG Sprintcar Series takes place at Perth Motorplex on Saturday February 7 when World Series Sprintcars makes its annual visit to the west coast.
