• Brooke Tatnell had a very eventful time getting to Australia to take on the reigns once again as Krikke MotorSport’s team driver.

Having left Dallas en route to Sydney, a passenger onboard the flight suffered a heart attack, forcing the pilot to turn the plane around 8hours into the flight and head back to LA. Tatnell then had to sit out a long tiring layover until he could board the next flight the following day. This saw him connect to Perth and land at 12.45pm, some 26 and a half hours late just in time to head straight to the Perth Motorplex in Kwinana Beach and the drivers meeting and scrutineering for the King Of Wings event.

Twenty eight cars made up the field in the fiercely contested nights racing and Tatnell in the KMS W2 Transport Equipment Hire, Barker Trailers hotrod sat in 4th place at the completion of time trials; even with a smoking engine. The team checked over the motor but it appeared to be all okay so when starting from position 5 in their heat and the engine starting to once again smoke and begin to ‘lay down’, Tatnell shut it down and pulled the car infield to post a DNF for the heat.

With a fuel issue of some kind thought to be the cause of the problem the crew decided to change motors rather than trying to diagnose and fix the fault so with the help of other team crew members the power plant was changed just in time to take to the field in the 20 lap ‘B Main’ from P3.

Tatnell went on to finish the B in 3rd place which allowed him a start in the all important King Of Wings ‘A Main’ from the back of the field in 21st place.

The King Of Wings race format is different to most other ‘A Main’ races as it’s broken down into two parts during the 40 lap event. The drivers and crews were told that there would be a ‘competition’ yellow light thrown sometime during lap 15 to 20 and then a red light stoppage would take place allowing teams to refuel and make whatever changes necessary to their cars within 7minutes.

So at the completion of the ‘Four Wide Salute to the Crowd’ the 24 cars formed up to take the green flag and within a mere six laps Tatnell already had the W2 KMS Cool car up into position 11 and then working his way past a further four cars in what can only be described as an epic duel and one of the best drives seen at the Motorplex for some time before the competition yellow was pulled on lap 20.

After refuelling and minor car adjustments the KMS beast retook to that racetrack in position 7 for the final 20laps of the race and again the team had the car set perfectly and BT passed a further three cars before a car spun with 12 laps to go. Once the race was underway there was yet another yellow with 10 laps remaining before the final chequered flag fell and passing yet another car to sit the KMS WA2 TEH hotrod on the podium in third place and rounding up a staggering 18 cars during the 40 lap event with what seemed to be the same engine fuel issue thwarting his charge to the front in the dying stages.

“That was one heck of a drive let me tell you! After a challenging night where we couldn't really focus on the track and car set up Dylan and Shaneo gave Brooke a great Hot Rod and boy did he use it! It is what looks like the same fuel issue came back to haunt us otherwise who knows what may have happened but considering where we had to start and the events that have unfolded I am very happy with the night. We had some challenges but it was actually good to have some drama during the race night so we could see our deficiencies and now we know what we need to make better and improve in our new transporter and some of our processes so believe it or not I am actually really happy we had some problems. In all a great night and cant with to have everything sorted and get back to the track!” Team Principal Shane Krikke commented.

Krikke MotorSport will compete this coming Saturday night (November 29th) at the Quit Bunbury City Speedway when they’ll compete in the Southern Thunder Sprintcar Series round two.
