• In a remarkable reversal of fortunes, 16-year-old rookie Lachlan McHugh bounced back from a wild crash two weeks earlier to dominate round two of the David Grose Real Estate/Western Landscaping Supplies Modlite Driver to America Series at Ausdeck Patios Archerfield Speedway on Saturday night (October 25).

Although the second-generation racer has considerable experience in Karting and spent a season in Junior Sedan competition, this meeting was only McHugh’s third ever in a Modlite and he finished the night undefeated against more than 20 other competitors, clocking the fastest lap in each event he contested.

Luke Whitehill filled the runner-up spot in the 20-lap feature event, with Jeff Jensen clinching the final place on the podium in third. Terry Leerentveld proved his win in a crash-marred opening round two weeks earlier was far from a fluke, finishing in fourth spot ahead to establish a significant point advantage. Dave Menz filled fourth in advance of Alex Coward and Zac McDonald, with Jarrod Steen, Darren Dobson and Paul Hovey completing the top ten.

The opening heat of the night was staged in slippery conditions and it was Aaron Prosser who adapted best to lead the field home, finishing in advance of McDonald and Whitehill.

Heat two saw young McHugh down Jeff Jensen and Tim Luscombe before Leerentveld outpaced Prosser and Hovey in heat three.

The final heat saw McHugh double up to emerge as top qualifier, finishing in front of Menz and Jensen on this occasion.

When the green flag flew to get the feature race underway, McHugh made the most of his pole position start to lead Jensen through the opening laps. Jensen chased hard and looked likely to mount a challenge on more than one occasion, but McHugh maintained his composure throughout multiple restarts – the last of which came when Cliff Whitehill crunched the wall in turn one with just four laps remaining - to clinch a popular win and win that proved popular with spectators.

David Grose Real Estate/Western Landscaping Supplies Modlite Driver to America progressive points (top 20): Terry Leerentveld 385, Dave Menz 230, Zac McDonald 210, Wayne Donaldson 205, Tim Luscombe 200, William Butler 200, Troy Carnall 165, Steve Collins 130, Lachlan McHugh 100, Luke Whitehill 95, Jeff Jensen 90, Alex Coward 75, Jarrod Steen 65, Darren Dobson 60, Paul Hovey 65, Cameron Lamb 50, Brittney Grose 45, Jac Carnall 40, Robert Peardon 30, Cliff Whitehill 25
