• Wangaratta City Speedway kicked off on Saturday night the 18th of October with a full club program along with the Victorian Compact Speedcars & Grand Prix Midget Clubs enjoying a great night of racing with Robbie Gordon coming out on top in the Cardwell Cup for Compact Speedcars & Goulburn Valley racer Jay Nicolaisen winning the competitive Sports Sedans feature against strong local & visiting competition.

Gordon won all three heats in the Compact Speedcars with Justin Paull chasing hard for second in the first two & William Van der ark likewise in the third heat. Gordon again proved unstoppable in the feature race where he beat Paull in another encouraging performance, Van der ark & Warren Gravina.

The Sports Sedans with a large field of runners split into two heats per round providing six heat races for the night & the visiting Nicolaisen brothers began the first round winning both heats with Jay then Harley winning the races. Wangaratta’s Craig Cottier won the third heat before Jay Nicolaisen again won the fourth. In the last round Rhys Collins & Andrew Jordan came out winners to set up the feature race field in starting positions.

Collins led the final early in his wicked sounding LS1 powered Commodore. Jay Nicolaisen made a top end pole line pass under Collins to snatch the lead and from there was never headed in a twenty five lap final.

New South Welshman Charlie Ball had his car catch on fire during the final whilst he was in the top half of the field and that caused a race stoppage before Nicolaisen resumed in front to defeat Collins, Jordan, Daniel Unternahrer & Albury’s Simon Hill.

The Grand Prix Midgets Masters Series began with the Australian & Victorian Champion Ash Booker beginning well taking wins in the first two heats of the day. Geelong race driver Chris Fowler won the third heat in front of Booker before Booker reversed the result to win the final ahead of Fowler & Shepparton’s Louis Rodriguez.

In supporting divisions Brenda Ladgrove won the Open Ladies Sedans ahead of Fleur Heiner & Fahy Paull. Liam Powell finished ahead of Cooper Cappellari & Jack Bear in the Junior Sedans with the Evans brothers finishing first and second in the Standard Saloon final when Gary led home Trevor followed by Mark Seller from Geelong in third place.

The next race meeting at Wangaratta is November the 8th for the annual Russell Frankel Memorial Vintage Classic race meeting with all club divisions also running on the program. The vintage portion of the meeting see’s various open wheel, hot rod & sedan divisions from days gone by come along to show how it used to be done.
